Oddly enough, Lullaby -> is just so jaw-droppingly legendary that I never gave the front half of the album the attention that it probably deserves. Plainsong was always just good to me, great as a statement of intent, but as a song it didn't set my ass on fire.

to me it's always felt like the perfect opener for this: equal parts crushing, bleak and ethereal. i think it sets the stage nicely for the rest of the record.

But the first three tracks are magnificent. I cannot imagine this album without Plainsong and Pictures of You.

I don't know if I can be friends with anyone who thinks pictures of you is a snoozer.

I also get if someone doesn't like Homesick, it's certainly quite sleepy and given its placement on the album it may be a bit redundant. Personally, I feel differently about it every time I listen; sometimes I want it to end already, sometimes I get lost in its haze.

Untitled, however, is a beautifully refreshing closer after the abyss that are the previous few tracks.

lol, I don't have anything outright negative to lay on any of those tracks (apart from Closedown, which can we agree is the clearest dud here?), but at random intervals over the last 8ish years I've thought "hey, maybe it's time to jam that album Disintegration by the Cure", listened to Pictures of You as a litmus test and then thought "...meh, another day" every time. It took downloading this without listening to it, forgetting about it, and then hearing Lullaby on shuffle to change my mind ;]
