@ Art - not only that but basically lost their ability to piece songs together with great transitions and just started throwing all these random prog riffs together with no cohesiveness

Yeah... Judging from the t/t, the mix on the drums was done horribly. Dude's playing is aight though.

The thing about PC is that they just got lazy.

i disagree
i don't think akerfeldt is the least bit lazy about any of his music and the idea that opeth has become uninspired is a misunderstanding

Scared to listen tbh, why did they choose to partner with Nuclear Blast? Sure Wilson wouldn't have minded producing for them.

The drum production is so damn flat from the singles I've heard, bass drum sounds plastic af.

I know Opeth always had overproduction on their records (especially from BWP onwards) but it's always worked in their favour.

This record sounds great production wise but Heritage was incredible in that regard.

So warm and everything was just enhanced thanks to Steve.

About the new one. The drum sound reminds me of Mastodon's album from a couple years ago. I have a feeling it's a crappy rip (even if it's apparently V0 or V1) cause there's some interference-like sound during the real soft bits but that sort of thing doesn't usually sap the drums of all their life so idk

Either way the production is only part of the problem. There's maybe 3 songs on the new one I like and even then after like 4 minutes I'm kind of aching for them to be over rip 'peth. Some part legit sound like prog parody.
