In my opinion, Portal and Urn are superior, but all of their albums are a 4.0+.

Devour Me, Colossus is incredible. Best thing they every did. If that doesn't sell you, nothing will.

Urn was kind of a letdown for me actually. Seemed a little too by-the-numbers by that point in their discog.

One day I’ll crack the prog-death code, I’m highly sensitive to wild swings in my appreciation for such things. Why does ‘vaguely Opethian’ usually = not good, when Opeth themselves are awesome? Quite the conundrum. Maybe people sioood just stop trying to compare stuff to Opeth? Damn it, think I just did.
At least I’ll always have Persefone’s ‘Core’.

because Opeth are homogenous af and not very many bands are good at being homogenous lol

It's intended to be more cool and trve

Stupid (or not) autocorrect.
Opeth are homogenous now? News to me.

Johnny, you should hear this album, ye. I wouldn't call it a meme at all. Just not my cup of tea, that's all.
|
| |
Opeth are homogenius, agreed
|

first couple of minutes of Pyrrhic are acc q good, with their violinist going nuts over a derivative but reliable melodeath riff - does this have much in that ballpark?
|
| |
Pretty much summarised the record there

okay, my hopes are raised somewhat

Everything's derivative if you start to think that way. Sure-fire way to never enjoy music again.
|
| |
only when the originators nailed a special quality than no-one else managed to capture. much as, say, at the gates had a good thing going, that definitely doesn't apply here
+ it's always important to pick sounds apart. a lot of great albums have qualities derivative of others
