Listened to this again the other day. I've come to the conclusion that I respect what they tried to do here. It has moments of brilliance like The Catalyst, Waiting For The End and Iridescent, but shit like When They Come For Me and Wretches And Kings are just awkward. Not even for Linkin Park, just as standalone songs with styles that don't mesh together well.

I think when they come for me is pretty coherent, and the whole middle eastern chant thing is really interesting. Wretches and Kings is pretty damn grating though, Mike's rap is good but but I just wish they hadn't made it all dubstep-y. But still think the album works so well as a whole, and that whole is much better than the sum of its parts

I like Wretches and Kings tbh. I prefer it to When They Come

This album has all the elements to be something respected and remembered. Yeah it's a little flawed at times, but on the whole it's extremely well put together. The only reason it won't receive the recognition it deserves is simply because it's a Linkin Park album, which is a shame as it has FAR more depth than Hybrid Theory or Meteora. Especially from a songwriting point of view.

"extremely well put together"

the pointless interludes say otherwise

Only pointless one is empty spaces (does 18 secs really bother you?), and WJL runs on too long, but the rest fit the album amazingly well. Jornada del muerto is fantastic

I don't see how. To me they're just stupid excuses to make Linkin Park sound deeper than they actually are.

But it's a concept/theme based album... so they are completely relevant imo.

That's one of my biggest problems with this. It's supposed to be a concept album but what's the underlying message within the music. It's so disjointed that I don't get what they're trying to say. The interludes just make it worse and I think the album would've worked better without them.

Well the interludes make it fairly clear, but I will agree they've not made it the most cohesive experience going. But I can see they put the majority of concept in the interludes.

The closest thing to a "conceptual theme" this album has is 'The Catalyst' and it's not an interlude.

I said the majority of the concept comes from the interludes.

I will admit this though, the intro song is a really cool way to start the album

The underlying message is that wars kill people so don't do them #bernie2016

Is the Catalyst and the intro the reason why it gets a 2? haha
