converge may be usurping neurosis as my favorite metal band

They’re predominantly a hardcore punk band so try again. Technically they ARE metal but as it isn’t the dominant force in the majority of their work it’d feel weird saying it.
Neurosis started out as a punk band of course but overall they appear more fitting.

Converge>Neurosis all day. They should be headlining all these shows they're playing together. Neurosis was underwhelming as hell live

I really can't get into this. Should I keep trying?

Depends what you don’t like it about it, probably should though. It was too much for me first time around.

"No"
Good point, I hadn't thought of that.
And for the record, at least a third of the crowd left after Converge finished playing at the show I went to. and they were the better live band by a large margin. I'd say Amenra was better live than Neurosis too tbh

Mostly the fact that it sounds too much like hardcore music. I rarely jive with genres containing -core as a suffix. However, I do detect some hints of early The Mars Volta and other crazy instrumental stuff that I enjoy when listening to the album. Also, I don't like the vocals. But it might be an aquired taste.

pinkfloyd, maybe you should try their more accessible work first, it can be too "core" for you, but they are brilliant.

Ya agreed with dd, try listening to Dusk In Us, All We Love We Leave Behind, or Axe to Fall. Those records are a lot more polished and accessible.
Definitely not better though imo

Agreed, those albums are the best for first timers. AtF is more metal, less core so maybe that one. AWLWLB is their best accessible core album for me.

Yeah this is one of their less accessible ones

I would have never thought I could appreciate a metalcore album, and here I am.
Sounds very different from my idea of metalcore though.

"And for the record, at least a third of the crowd left after Converge finished playing at the show I went to"
didn't see that at any of the shows that they played together that i went to
"and they were the better live band by a large margin."
can't agree with that at all. saw them in '15 and they killed it but they were underwhelming for this one
"I'd say Amenra was better live than Neurosis too tbh"
amenra was probably the most impressive of the three

CugnoBrasso you’ve almost certainly been listening to the wrong stuff, what’s your general idea of metalcore? Most people either think of it as melodic death metal riffs with breakdowns or lame scene garbage with chugging backed by synths and squeaky clean vocals. Neither are representative of the best the genre has to offer, as I’m sure you’ve noticed with Converge lol

i made myself listen to this ad nauseum to the point that it all sounds melodic and unabrasive. Not the best route but at least i love this now.

That, and i envisioned my own personal "jane doe" in real life to the music and that worked wonders.
