Ah well if Bitchfork got ahold of it, then that probably will play a part. Maybe not here necessarily, as it was hyped within Sput enough already for people to notice.
I’m a little bemused though, I thought P4k only liked bad music now. And since when did they ever like DM?

honestly I have a sense of why this band got picked up by pitchfork but it's hard to describe
it makes sense to me based on a lot of their past token metal albums

might just be the promo email hit them at the right time and they picked it to be their new death metal flagship album
i personally don't get the hype for this post-release: despite enjoying it, i was pretty let down by this album, it lacks all the unique elements that made the band special and instead just sounds like a tribute to loads of 90s dm bands, and that's fine, but why is it hailed as the best thing in dm right now? where was this reception for Starspawn, an album that was far more deserving?

What were some of their past token metal albums? Off the top of my head all I can think of is sunbather

Lateralus by Tool
They loved that one

didnt colored sands and teethed glory also get picked up by a bunch of bigger non-metal places?
christ 2013 was a nuts year looking back

@Gallantin: Starspawn was indeed more deserving, but this just helped to cement their status as one of the better modern DM bands. Sometimes you need the follow-up to hit home before awarding too much credit.

Blood Incantation were one of the best modern dm bands from their very first demo, and every release from then up until Starspawn proved they had ingenuity and songwriting abilities to create multiple classics that were all unique and varied.
This album did the opposite. This album stopped pushing their sound to new places and instead created an insanely by-the-book death metal riff soup record that, while very good, really regressed from all the cool shit they did before.

I mean the run of Astral Spells, Interdimensional Extinction, Mephitic Effluvia, and Starspawn was amazing. Some of my favourite death metal releases EVER. It was exciting as hell hearing them all as they came out and each one was its own masterpiece. Getting copies of those early releases was wild because of how quickly they sold out. Underground dm fans were hot on BI from day one.
This album? It's just so...normal. And THIS is the one where all the "normies" (dumb term) decide they love death metal? Idk. None of this is the fault of BI. They can do what they want. I just hate how metal trends work, I guess.

This is pretty darn refined on reflection... I do actually agree with you, yet I also love this so I’m conflicted. Perhaps this could’ve displayed a more adventurous progression from their earlier material, but I can’t say the result is unsatisfactory.

Insanely by-the-book death metal riff soup record??? I like that sentence but taken out of context, lol. We need that book!!!

It's a good album full of great riffs and some really cool stylistic throwbacks to bands like Death, Morbid Angel, even Timeghoul. But it's because this album feels so much like a 90s throwback in its style that I just don't think of it as highly as their previous work. There are a million great dm bands I can listen to if I want to hear a ripped off Death riff. There's only one band I can listen to if I want to hear Starspawn.

Ok mate, you make yourself clear and I respect that. I agree that Starspawn is better, no doubt. I just don't see how HHOTHR is "your typical DM".
