Luc that is exactly how I view their discog too. Except that the wonderful prog era is characterised by some disappointing albums and one of their best ones.
Watershed rules.

Noooo. Watershed is middle tier, I can agree with that, but it's still one of my favourite metal albums of the 2000s.

Yeah I love Watershed, but it is middle tier in their discography

To me, it goes like this:
Orchid - Morningrise: romanticism, gothic aesthetic, progressive black metal with doom references. Tracks are either overly long or too small, like interludes.
MAYH - BP: thematic/concept albums, death and christianity, some old-school formulas, tighter songwriting in a prog death context. Songs are can still be long, but there are more traditional structures and song characters (the banger, the ballad etc.)
D/D - Watershed: identity crisis. The material is always good, but they're not sure if they want to experiment on their old or new sound.
Heritage - ICV: prog-rock stuff

For me, the prog era isnearly as consistent as their 2000s era, comparitively. I'm personally not a big fan of either Deliervance and Damnation.

"I'm not a huge fan of Deliverance overall but the title track is amazing.
Damnation was incredible though"

Damnation is my least favourite Opeth record haha. I wholly admit I'm in the minority though. LOVE Heritage and ICV and like a lot of PC. I need to revisit Sorceress so I'm not sure where I'd put that at this moment.

Deliverance is underrated in my opinion. It's very dry, but the first four tracks are incredible, and the others aren't at all bad.
Then again, their standard is so super high I at least understand the backlash it gets.

''Except Heritage which is perfection'' Mary YESSSSSSS!!!!
Damnation has wayyyyy too much mellotron and Steven Wilson, don't really like it.

Heritage is a near classic. PC is a dud, while it still has two of my favourite songs of theirs (Eternal Rains and Faith in others). Sorceress is fun, always like listening to it, although most fans dislike it. ICV is a huge grower, second after Heritage

Yeah, Damnation is just a little boring and the melodies Mike wrote there are his least interesting. Deliervance is a little better, but every other heavy album surrounding it is so much more interesting so I never feel the urge to go back to it.

Hmmm no, production was totally awful and it contains a lot of very meh moments to me. It's their worst record by far imo.

Cusp and Moon Above must both rule live, yes.
I'll never forgive them for not going nuts on River, though
