hilarious that you’re also in that trapt thread where I literally said word for word “The fact that anyone actually defends this dogshit instead of just listening to old Linkin Park records literally makes me feel better as a person”
log off for the day chief

look i love this album still but i can absolutely see this being too structured and formulaic for some lol, esp for someone who didnt grow up on it
|

no one in the previous discussion has yet stated those as reasons for disliking the album

forgive that being my interpretation of the constant throwing around of the words "basic" and "simple" in reference to the songcraft
|

songwriting on this + Meteora is tight as the balls of the zillions of users who lazily praise/critique songwriting without conveying a meaningful impression on what exactly that word means to them would be if I could put them in a vice
not a second wasted on any of these tunes (excepting Cure For the Itch ig), fat-free structures facilitating maximum impact for strong hooks all the way through
problem is that they sure af do make ample use of the same writing strategy throughout the record (which is more than homogenous than Meteora, to its detriment). poor emaciated earlydays LP songwriting did need a bit more meat on them bones across a whole alb, but for a 2-5 song binge it's perfect
and there's enough worthless flab across the rest of their discog to make up for it

fucking exactly, thank you johnny. christ

Also, the whole inspiration thing has absolutely nothing to do with what I think of the album or band itself. I’m just pointing out that music being highly influential isn’t always a good thing, like you said with Meshuggah.

"Also, the whole inspiration thing has absolutely nothing to do with what I think of the album or band itself."
I'm thinking it does, given you have yet to provide a meaningful critique of the music here my friend, as johnny points out
Nothing personal wildcard! We can meet up on the Jar of Flies thread sometime and share some vibes : P

"problem is that they sure af do make ample use of the same writing strategy throughout the record" yeah i think this is a lot more precisely on the money ngl. it's not really how each individual track is put together standalone rather than how the record puts them all together
|
| |
yep! i more or less stated this on the last page, albeit less eloquently than jotwah

this album slaps. Meteora slaps. Good band

Onion is spot on about how I feel with this record. There’s really only two songs that I outright dislike on the album. The rest, while still being good songs individually, just kinda blend together aside from a couple that are total standouts.

without Runaway and One Step this would unironically be perfect

what do you think are the jams here wildcard?
i would prob lose runaway for pictureboard or she couldnt yea, but i think all the songs here are at least solid
|
| |
damn I forgot Runaway existed ngl
chuck that, Crawling and maybe By Myself (the one chorus that absolutely does not hold up outside of the 13-14 y/o gloryphase imo), and we're cooking

oof hard disagree.
I really don’t like One Step Closer and In the End. By Myself and With You are the easy favorites. I like Crawling a lot too but I really do think the piano version is amazing. The rest are fine.
And yes absolutely no hard feelings lol, we both like the album!

Place for my Head and Forgotten are the real gems here, especially structurally, but I do sometimes wish the recorded version of PFMH had the opening breakdown they started throwing into their live sets too. It’s also a criminal the High Voltage Redux was relegated to a bonus track (though I see the label’s point from a marketing perspective in the context of y2k).
