Opener feels a little like SikTh in the beginning and that's a good thing. I gonna like this, I guess
|
| |
Compared to Sikth, this is drone metal levels of tekk

revisiting this because it wasn't clicking on first listen, fucking great shit here

If it'll blow your mind even more if you didn't know, they made this when they were ~17 years old.

Arif wrote the lyrics based on Dostoevsky and attended some annual symposium on him.

That is mindblowing, I really need to dig into this record. It's probably going to become one of my favorites in time.

Fortress is much better than this in hindsight
|
| |
The main thing I’d give this an edge on is lyrically, but otherwise they improved so much in almost every other aspect for fortress. This might have slightly better hooks too, but I could coin flip there tbh.

feels like people have been flipping coins on those two records for 12 years now and land 50/50

Yeah I don’t really care about the lyrics. Musically Fortress is quite a bit more interesting. Plus the vocalist actually turns in a stronger performance on Fortress

they're about the same to me, the only edges they'd lose for me is how this sounds amateurish and that fortress sounds a bit extravagant in some ideas.

This is indeed quite amateurish at times. I don’t mind the tongue in cheek bombast of fortress but I totally get why it’d bother people

Album Rating: 3.5
This is easily their weakest album. Fortress was a massive step up.

this used to be my favorite and then Volition came out...
and then Scurrilous grew
but that doesn't make this any less astounding

this really should of have had The Divine Suicide of K. close the album because personally, A Plateful of our Dead is the weakest track here.

Yea I dig a plateful of our dead, but it does seem like an odd choice for a closer.
