and i hate that i see it as such, because apparently this is one of the best albums ever. objectively, it's a very important/influential recording, and i would never deny its cultural relevance, but i'm basically forcing myself to love it as much as you all do at this point =[

you aren't that unique in not liking this, plenty of people consider its reputation to be vastly overrated

i enjoy it but they have a point

so much agreement
it's a great record and I appreciate its influence but others have been much more successful in furthering the sound
that being said, "When You Sleep" is definitely a masterpiece

I don't think they were too concerned with furthering a sound or being influential or creating something unique or whatever. Sheilds just had a specific sound in his head and his perfectionist and obsessive behavior forced him to record an album that sounded exactly that way. This dedication is almost worth the classic status alone.

a trove that is itself the most beautiful crystal, housing nothing in its walls but the cries of angels dying

kind of backs up what i was getting at about the album's reputation and the "genius toiling away in the studio for 2 years" mythmaking about the recording process adding to it

Could've been recorded by hyperactive kindergartners on experimental medication during snack time
which consisted of eating graham crackers in lieu of paste while contemplating the finality of
glitter, & I'd still think it's the greatest album in the history of forever.

It'd be silly to think that people aren't allowed to disagree, or to have their own opinions.

Sometimes things need to be appreciated based on when they were released and what technology was available at the time. With that in mind, this is nuts

And yeah this isn't my favourite album ever sonically but it's an incredible listen and on its own terms basically perfect
