It's no good comparing them, they set out for totally different things.

disagree, you could use such specious logic to avoid literally any comparison between albums that arent the exact same style

this has some god-tier songs, but the last three bring it down. The Mantle is good the whole way through, every song is absolutely essential in its makeup.

@park, yeah, I kinda agree with that mindset. It's not really what I was trying to get at though. I basically mean that one could just accept both albums for what they are because they are both basically perfect in approaching what they aim for or at the very least come close to it. You might not think so, but as of now, I can't imagine me thinking of them in another way tbh. If I had to choose one, it would be The Mantle (have it 5'd), but I wouldn't say that this has any major flaws (except for maybe The Grain).

Honestly the Our Fortress Is Burning suite is the best thing about this album for me.

Which essentially makes it the best thing about Agalloch's discography seeing as this is the only Agalloch album I really care about.

"I Disagre. As an individual track it's fantastic, in the context of the album it's slightly inferior."
How though? It's the perfect closer. To have The Grain shroud you in soft noise for 5 minutes to have it all suddenly stop with a tick of a movement of a clock and a few scraping sounds coming through gradually through time is such a brilliant change in mood.

It's a logical follow-up to The Grain, but then again The Grain isn't really a logical follow-up to the rest of the album imo

Disagreed but fair enough, when I finished the album despite how much it peaks on Bloodbirds and how The Grain it makes sense I didn't enjoy its execution so to have a track which is so gigantic to follow made me smile with joy. I feel like the rest of the album is the main story and Scars is like the unseen epilogue.

From what I remember this one is at least a little more enjoyable than The Mantle
