It's not a switch that flips though. Generally, I think what happens is that you have a word to describe someone who is different in some way... then over the course of years you have an increasing number of folks that begin to use that word in a disparaging manner. After a while, it becomes a big enough issue where people find a new term because people have gotten used to hearing the old term in a derogatory manner and feel uncomfortable saying it because people might think they're using it to insult someone

I get what you’re saying, but “people might think they’re using it to insult someone” doesn’t really track because you’re trading one insulting word for another. Like switching from using idiot or imbecile (which again, were used by medical professionals to diagnose mentally disabled people), to retard being the taboo word.. we’re just gonna pretend like those other words weren’t historically used to say the same thing? And aren’t by and large used today to disparage someone’s intelligence? It’s just baffling to me. Idk, maybe it’s because I’m autistic or something that I don’t get it. Tbh, "cunt" is a pretty analogy for the f-slur and the r-slur in that they kinda straddle the line of slur and run of the mill insult/descriptor. It's much more acceptable to say now than it was for a long time, but you're still not exactly gonna use it in company where you're not totally comfortable with the intent and understanding of others.

Right, but you have to acknowledge that there is are gradations between "motherfucker" and "cunt" and the f-slur and the r-slur. Unclereich is right to point out that elsewhere it's not as offensive as it is here in the US. Language is fluent and complex.
