I listen to this band so much that I guess I just find everything that came after EiF to feel relatively predictable. In many ways this kept me guessing more than Shrines because we’ve never really heard them do melody to this extent.
I think if Shrines has a case for best, it’s because it bridges the classic ulcerate dissonance with hints of the tonality and groove that we get here, but personally I think not on the strength of its dissonance or complexity.
Ironically, if they had released this early in their careers, say before EiF, I wouldn’t be that impressed, but to me the context of them mastering their classic sound and then doing it again after embracing traditional melodic and harmonic sensibilities elevates this

@Mars
Its definitely not as chaotic or hellish as Shrines but in turn it puts more emphasis on the riffs and melodies.

Fair stuff my man. This is certainly new territory for them and the appeal isn't lost on me. I admittedly don't have the perspective of being more of a long time fan though, so that kind of evolution doesn't resonate as much as it could.

And yeah, this is more about the riffs, but my point was I prefer their other approach when compared to this.

true Mars, nice Point. Shrines was an instant classic for me. This one, sure is great but does not fit for me so well.

@80 no doubt Vermis is the darkest one, it fits a cool niche in their discography. it might be my least favorite ulcerate though , mainly because I think Hoggard’s riffs are below par for his usual standard. I prefer listening to fracture tbh, much more traditional but a lot of fun

I think I'm in a distinct minority in having Destroyers and Vermis in my top 3 Ulc

EiF was the first one I heard getting into them because i saw it has the highest average. I don't follow these guys as much as others so I've mostly lost track of their past stuff and haven't given them solid ratings.

"Destroyers is a popular pick. no?"
Moreso lately it seems, which is cool because I feel like it has the most "personality" in their discog. They really slow down the songwriting velocity (song have time to build and ebb, riffs are revisited often, lots of atmospheric effects) and let things breathe and the songs are more memorable for it. This returns to that in places and I really enjoy it.

I embrace the chaos when it comes to these guys, if I want slow builds I generally look elsewhere.

Where’s best for slow builds demo dude?
