Plenty of bands can do both, which kind of renders them pointless in my eyes.

"Plenty of bands can do both"

Like who?

I didn’t say they were attempting to do both by the way. Also it doesn’t necessarily have to be a compromise. Surely no-one is actually suggesting a choice needs to be made here? The list is pretty long.

baneful choir is good but not that good
wiz is right that starspawn is better than this, but this is still great
I do find their hipster crossover appeal kind of bizarre tho

Anyone got any theories how that “crossover appeal” came about? It’s not like the band is pandering to that audience via the music. Is it the themes/drug use? Is it hype created in circles like these that somehow carried over to hipsters? Wait, this board is hipsters only, basically. Seems I’ve answered my own question.

I think this album is just easily digestible death metal, just like Tomb Mold's stuff, and both of them being put out on reputable labels means that hipsters looking to get into death metal lucked out when they ran into two easy bands they could glom onto.

In this case I think they are easy because they are honnestly good and dynamic...I think this kind of dm is not a good dm entrance if you are not used to this kind of sound...yet it can be perceived as such if you are familiarized with the genre.

I mean, that s really a hipster statement Gal...ahah x) m/

^I agree, but I reckon a part of why people are finding this easier is because it's less ugly and more melodic than most death metal. It's not as chill as melodeath, but there's a vibe it's going for that goes down easier than the typical "violent and pummeling and gross" - aesthetic dm bands usually go for.

That vibe *is* still there, it's just less prominent

I think these guys maintain a core-death metal aesthetic to satisfy fans of the genre, but the focus on melodic and also calmer progressive passages gives them a wider appeal. Anything beyond that is just over-thinking it.

shadow there are lots of good dm albums and p4k hipsters don’t like em all
I don’t have a problem with it, I just don’t get the rationale
