So many different reasons I get that, neeka. This is one of their least immediate albums, and even their most immediate stuff isn't immediate. To clarify, they might as well have invented the term grower just for this band.

The National made Sleep Well Beast at Long Pond, and you can see the studio on the album cover, a black pyramid set against a gray sky with the band visible inside of a square window. Ultimately, I ended up talking to 80 percent of The National, drummer Bryan Devendorf was already in the pond, opting to spend a muggy July day swimming rather than doing an interview.
Sounds like Devendorf is kind of a dick

As much as I adore this band (I have 3 of their records 5'd), I just cannot get behind this one.

Don't think it will ever reach the level of their classics. You know what though? I said EXACTLY THE SAME THING about TWFM when it came out.

This one isn’t convincing. I’ve been lukewarm before & time has proven me wrong but this feels different. Time will tell.

This and TWFM aren't on the same level as the three before it, but they're still in like the top 30 of the decade (High Violet is #1 of the decade, by any band, imo)

This might soon be getting a bump to 4.5. How do these guys do it. It's incredible! Might still end up 5th best just below TWFM though

If not for that weird dip in quality in the middle, this would be perfect.

After listening to the last song on this I immediately followed it up with Lucky You from Sad Songs and thought fuck me they really have lost the magic.
Try it.

I think their discography has swelled to the point where ranking their albums is futile. Just let them breathe and exist together. There's obviously always a clear beginning at Alligator (really, more than half of 'Sad Songs...') where these albums can be single and mingle. Such an otherworldly band.

I can sort of get why some people love Sad Songs but personally it’s never connected like everything that followed did.
