A lot of bands definitely like Brand New but I'm not sure how much they're influenced by them. The band's sound changes with every album anyway so it's hard to pin down what sounding like Brand New actually is unless you're copying Jesse Lacey like Brave Bird.

now obviously music is subjective but i think most albums with a classic status around here only have that because the quality is seen as being that good by a majority of people here. the obvious example is TDAGARIM which is hardly influential at all but extremely praised here. and i don't think anyone goes around 5'ing albums just because of how influential they were
nah, a huge amount of the discourse on this album is people just jacking off about how influential and legendary and revolutionary it is, not just that it's a very good rock album. as well as being a gateway album non-musical reasons definitely play a big part in why this got put up on a pedestal (insta 5). they tried super hard to give the impression of having lots of Big Ideas and people bought it. i've already typed enough paragraphs in this thread but i think this comment from dfelon describes it pretty well
Refused positioned themselves to be bigger than they are and people ate it up and the album wasn't as revolutionary as everyone (aka their reputation) asserts it to be. It's funny to me that people are arguing that this album is all about "feeling." That it comes down to pure subjectivity. I think the way this album has risen to its cult-like status is by people (aka critics) claiming it has some objective edge over other albums. As in, that classic Refused pretentiousness actually pays off in artistic ways as opposed to some kind of personal connection to the listener or the vibe or the ill flows or something. This sentiment seems really contrary to what I feel like people (aka critics) say.

after having spent a good deal of my day on absolutepunk, i can guarantee there are than a few bands that are influenced by them
or well, claim to, at least

Exactly what I meant by they seem to "like" Brand New. Plenty list Brand New as influences but very few actually sound like them specifically.
|
| |
i think being "influenced" by them and "sounding" like them aren't exactly the same
there are things like atmosphere and composition that can be inspired by them too, sometimes the atmosphere can be similar to some other band while not really being musically alike
granted i can't think of any examples atm so i'm probably just talking out of my ass

Fair enough, but I don't feel like that's enough to label them as an explicitly influential band.

Balance and Composure is a lot like Brand New iirc

Ya got me, haven't heard them. I won't make you list anymore, though.
|

i mean that's the only one i can think of
i hardly listen to any of the genres brand new are or ever were so (unless you want to classify some
of the stuff on Daisy as screamo, which i wouldn't do but w/e)

seelike, I kind of get, almost even agree with what porch is saying
but like
I love this album so much.

i think that argument can be applied to most stuff that's considered "legendary" so ultimately it's all about how you feel it mang, fuck the world
