over 20 years later and not much has changed here
Comforting, in a way

I’ll catch shit for this but it’s kinda sad that Chester spent almost all his time in this band. He’s far and away the best thing these guys had going for them. I would’ve loved if he at least was in a heavier side project because he has great harsher vocals

Lmao dawg. Do not disrespect Mike Shinoda like that

He’s fine… but put him up against even the mid rappers from that era, yeah enough said honestly.
I’m sure he contributed more than just vocals but he does not have bars man

Yeah listening back to Fort Minor was kinda awkward, the gap between him and SoB is so fucking huge lol
|
| |
@wildcard Mike is literally the brains behind the whole band, wrote and produced the vast majority of their songs etc
Chester is unequivocally not “far and away the best thing this band had going on” or whatever lmao.

Yeah okay, and you have it 5’d for that reason. Personally, I don’t really think the band is anything special even on this record without Chester. Pretty basic songwriting, riffs aren’t really that great aside from a few tracks, etc etc.
So yeah, I think Chester was far and away the best thing about this band. I think One More Light really shows that, he put that fucking record on his shoulders.

The songwriting on this is not basic it is revolutionary. Definitely simple but basic is a mischaracterization. It’s fine if you’re not that into it though

"I’ll catch shit for this but it’s kinda sad that Chester spent almost all his time in this band"
Did you ever listen to Dead By Sunrise? That was a industrial rock band with Chester and the guys from Orgy. They had some solid tracks.

No I haven’t, is it pre LP? Outside of LP I only knew about his little stint in Stone Temple Pilots, which I think was a lot better than people give it credit for.
And to be clear, basic and simple are perfectly fine, I gave the record (and meteora for that matter) a good score. There’s some absolute bangers, but a few of these tracks have aged horribly and overall I think that while this record was revolutionary and highly influential, I don’t think it was in a good way at all.
Like, think about any band on the radio that would’ve said Linkin Park was an influence. Chances are they are fucking terrible, the amount of awful music that exists because of these first two records is staggering.
edit: wow I had no idea this Dead By Sunrise record existed, I’ll give it a spin this weekend for sure

Songwriting [2], but also I am once again asking you to consider how revolutionary the production job here is. Studio as an instrument and whatnot. Dead by Sunrise is okay, but I really wish Chaz had done more a la Cross Off from Morton’s album.

Okay yeah I absolutely agree with that. The bands records have always sounded phenomenal, even the ones that I think suck

Chester was the best thing in LP though, 100% Eventhough Mike & Joe their influence was neat, this band never really made anything completely stellar. Meteora and A Thousand Suns come closest in that regard.

Can’t get behind the idea that the songwriting here is basic sorry guys.
Songwriting =/= song structure
The songs here are actually quite interesting (and as mentioned before, revolutionary *in addition to* the production being revolutionary) even though they are formulaic over the course of the record
As for the argument about inspiring bad music, who cares. Meshuggah inspired a wave of crap music, doesn’t mean they’re also lame. Ain’t a single band after Linkin Park that sounds like Linkin Park anyway so yeah that argument is still nonsense to me

he’s just rationalizing it like that because he’s likely embarrassed to plainly say he likes it because this site is a stage show for some people

you can like a record but still see its flaws... And he literally gave it a 3.5? lmfao are you OK?
