"I mean checking something you know you will not like" Again, how could you possibly be certain you wont like something?

i don't think he means you could do it with total certitude but you can often probabilistically gauge whether you might dislike something before listening, especially when the forthcoming listen is an artist whom you've heard before in some capacity or a genre you aren't fond of. like what do you think the chances are of you disliking the new chief keef tape, ghandi? lol. i'd say they're pretty high. you don't have to be a prophet to realize these things.

I think most of you already know that I have no problem with admitting that I like to find stuff I'm almost sure I won't enjoy. It's not just because of the score though.

But I mean, weren't we talking about me not liking popular stuff or something?

"you disliking the new chief keef tape, ghandi?" Sure but thats not for all cases. The majority of my lower scores are not for meme albums or notoriously bad albums like Ping Guy. Also sometimes I will feel like seeking out bad novelty music out of morbid curiosity

Same. In fact, I do that quite often, lol.

I don't but I can see that some genuinely do as well as its visual equivalent of watching trash television shows or b-movies.

yea i mean it's all circumstantial. i really only pursue music i think i would like based on info like genre, etc. but if i felt so inclined, i could easily pinpoint probably hundreds of albums i would dislike without even needing to listen to them lol.

Yeah, it's basically the same thing.

but people who do that usually at least get some enjoyment in a "so bad it's good" way

This dude seems to just be a full-blown musical masochist

Hal said what I pretty much wanted to say.

I honestly think its completely pointless to check bad music because life is way too short to waste time on bad music when there's so much music I know I'll enjoy and could instead be listening to.

Take a personal goal of mine for example. I started really listening to rap in the summer of 2016. I've heard a few hundred g funk albums and I haven't even made a dent in what's out there. I hope to, in my lifetime, listen to, say, 15,000 g funk albums. I want to be able to go into any playlist/mix on youtube and know everything from it. I want to be a literal walking encyclopedia on the genre. It's unreasonable based on how much is out there but I'm not gonna come close to accomplishing it if I waste so much time on bad music.

I could never do that. I feel like you hit a saturation point in niche genres and once you've covered all the bases in the best way it's time to move on to other pastures.

@Drifter
You consider listening to bad music a waste, I don't; I consider only listening to good or bad music a waste. I don't really care about recognizing stuff in a playlist, and I don't find satisfaction in just listening to music I like, I can't truly appreciate the good if I'm not familiar with the bad. I live to improve and change, not to enjoy.

Thats why it's kind of unreasonable. I have no idea if I'll even pass 1k in the next 5 years (probably) but still.

what i choose to listen to is mood-contingent to the point where i won't be able to dwell in the same genre for more than like a solid week. i basically pinball around from genre-specific binge to genre-specific binge.

"I live to improve and change, not to enjoy."

but you obviously enjoy improving and changing... no? or else you wouldn't feel so motivated by those things. also i would contend that if you are getting satisfaction out of music which you deem 'bad' then that music ultimately isn't bad to you.. like it could be qualitatively bad in your mind but if it's bringing you satisfaction can you really call it bad still?

"but you obviously enjoy improving and changing... no?"
Sometimes. It is more of a "it was worth it in the end" thing than something I enjoy as a whole. I enjoy the result, not the process, and I can't enjoy both. When I said "not to enjoy" I meant "not only to enjoy".
"can you really call it bad still?"
I know what you're saying, but yes, I still can and I do.
