this album is at least a 4.5, otherwise you don't "get" it. and if you don't "get" it, then go on a soul-searching journey and listen to Neurosis (or Godspeed will do if that's too intense) until you do "get" it. then come back and give your enlightened opinion of at least 4.5.

"No, the album is at least a 5. Anything lower is stupid and wrong."
lol. I like Oceanic better. That statement brings back fond memories from the Halo Thread.

Oceanic is more direct...Syndic Calls and Altered Course take a whole lot of patience. they're co-5's, but Grinning Mouths is a much better ending than Hym so Panopicon gets the edge.

Maritime. I rest my case.

They both rule. I might just give this 5.

also nice av but I feel I need to disagree with all points you make here...I find this album to be WAY more direct than oceanic. the whole thing is just more accessible to me than oceanic. (does not mean better obvs) Also, Grinning Mouths rules but I think From Sinking and Hym form just about the best ending to any album I know, imo.

"the whole thing is just more accessible to me than oceanic"
accessible, sure. the vocals are generally cleaner and the soundscapes are more...lush I guess? by direct I mean the songwriting is more to-the-point on Oceanic. instead of six-minute buildups (syndic calls) and long guitar solos (so did we, in fiction), there are distinct parts to each song, like the A-B-A form of False Light and brilliant ending sequence to Carry (the P5-P4-m6 guitar lick might be my favorite moment on the album).
"ITAOT will always be my jam"
Holy Tears and Garden of Light are both awesome. also, the storyline of Absence is amazing, in that it leaves so much to interpretation but is still exhilarating. I equate the rolling tom drum pattern (that begins the album, shows again in Dulcinea, and ends Garden of light) with Quixote's endless search for Dulcinea. the first time, he's riding into the story with trepidation but determination; the second time he's full of hope as he gallops towards his lover. at the end it turns out that she's only in his imagination, but his hope for the future is all that matters as the theme becomes a triumphant ending to the album -- a "rides into the sunset" theme, I guess.
