"Personally, I think 100% blunt lyrics work best when such phrases are interweaved with more richly metaphorical phrases. It makes the payoff all the more potent as the audience doesn't really see it coming, and it cuts through the established wordplay like a left hook."

Completely agreed. In fact, as overused as this example may be, I think Luca by Brand New is a perfect depiction of that balance. The way it uses flowery-yet-impactful imagery over slow, tense instrumentation... and then the song just explodes with that one screamed line "WHERE YOU BEEN!" The buildup/payoff relationship is so damn good on that song

“ if I can't outdo them poetically I don't see the point in ME being so hard on them”

But how does one outdo poetically? Even then, if you don’t do, how do ever criticise? Like, if you can’t make a “better” film, how do you criticise any movie? Can you only do so to a certain point? Why?

@MoM: I mean the most I can ever usually say on a film I dislike is that I "found the acting cringey" or "found it unbearably boring", it's like critiquing like a segment on a wrestling show or a wrestling match - some matches can just be flat out boring to watch, I don't feel like I need to analyze specific segments with a fine-tooth comb because i'm admittedly not on the level of the workers and the writers. It makes me come off like an asshole that thinks she knows what precise things to do to make a match or a film better.

@Koris: to this day I don't think I'll ever get it with Brand New. I didn't even hear that song till after Jesse got outed, and I don't feel like getting super into their music due to that. Fuck you Jesse Lacey.

there is little i enjoy more than cryptic/enigmatic art, especially with respect to literature/film. dont remember who said this but neat and tidy stories/endings allow you to stop thinking about them. it's the mysterious pieces of art that will stay with you and allow you to analyze them from every which angle. see my avatar

If you think so, but then what about any art? How do you criticise any art, even in mediums you do make? How do you measure whether you do something better than someone else or not in subjective fields? If it all comes down to opinion anyway, why limit your opinion on any art then? Why not explore your feelings in depth, rather than not because you don’t feel like you could make better? If you do feel like you can do better than someone in some art, how do you know? Who are some you think you do better at in the mediums you do practice?

Tbh in the case of films I've just never been interested in many big series. I've never felt like watching the LOTR trilogy *no matter how many times someone constantly begs me to* because the fantasy theme isn't my thing and the runtime is prohibitive for my enjoyment. And nobody I know in my personal life that I ACTUALLY want to be around is interested either so they wouldn't rope me in.

And in music I feel it'd come off pretentious to be all hyper analytical about any lyrics that aren't to some supposed level of poetry meanwhile, i write music and my lyrics aren't any better. like if i was to go on some crusade abt how surface level an album's lyrics are, meanwhile someone could just look up mine and see the lyrics to "Dead Inside Like Me" (a song that had effectively been in purgatory for 6 years before it was finally released) by Waves Ablaze and see that, no, my lyrics aren't significantly more "poetic".

Yeah Cremator's one of the best. Absolutely adore Diamonds of the Night, Marketa Lazarova, Adelheid, The Ear, Sun in a Net as well, and just about everything else I've seen from the movement's also fucking great

ngl not really much of a film buff at all because it's not really common that something will pop up that i'm like "WOW I need to see this"

it's usually "wow, another goddamn superhero film", "wow, another goddamn fantasy flick", "wow another cheesy romcom that I can't watch with a significant other to enhance the experience", and then rarely it's a biopic about something interesting, like BlacKkKlansman or Straight Outta Compton. I tend to like more based-in-reality type stuff, if not that then just make me laugh a shit ton tbh.
