"is that why he sounds annoying to me on Stained Class AND the cuts I've heard from Sad Wings of Destiny?"
It seems redemption is unattainable for your poor soul, my dear

he sounds fine at parts and then he just starts these ridiculous wails that even uber tough asshole Phil fucking Anselmo can do without sounding grating as piss (see: Cemetery Gates), the music itself is kickass enough to where I still kinda enjoy it but Rob just doesnt do it for me.

I suppose you dislike Ian Gillan as well then?

Ian Gillan is alright. not quite as harsh on the ears. out of these 80s operatic style vocalists I think Dio was the best of them all

Dio is probably my favorite vocalist but the thing about Halford is how wide his range was. From lower operatic notes to high pitched ones. And there is a great appeal for many people in cool high pitched vocals.
Just like in Dreamer Deceiver it sound as if there were two totally different singers in the song.

Dreamer Deceiver is precisely the Sad Wings cut I was thinking of. His higher vocals in that are very hard to listen to, as impressive as it is that he's able to do that in the same song as the more restrained sound he does throughout a huge chunk of it.

Yea, Dreamer Deciever rules. It's like the perfect depressing ballad

Would've been better personally if he enlisted Steven Tyler to do the higher vocals...I prefer his sound to Halford's on those screechy high notes

@park
Phil might be a neonazi meathead but there is no denying that he can actually pull off some impressive vox, especially in Down and Pantera's slower, more contemplative tracks (by there standards ofc)
