one of those bands I always like 'bits of a song' but rarely an entire song
not a huge fan of that :D

@venin Yeah, Live at Bush Hall will probably be refreshing if Isaac's vocal delivery/lyrics is the big hang up for you
After a couple years I've decided that the Billie Eilish line is good, actually
I think there's a myriad of flaws and "uncomfortabilities" in Isaac's lyrics and vocals but it comes with the territory when you're being that sincere and unapologetic. The downside of that is some lyrics are just going to be too odd indulgent or hyper personal for people to vibe with

Yeah I think I'll like the Bush Hall album more for sure

Why do people get so stuck on the Billie Eilish line, like music has never referenced pop culture before lmao

Idk for me it's just something that bugs me with modern records in particular, bc it feels like it needlessly dates the albums. 20 years later if Billie fades out of the spotlight people will look back on this like "who?" and then the supposedly timeless nature of this music won't be there anymore ig? like, there's a reason people try to make new versions of 1985 or We Didn't Start the Fire with newer references, because those songs are dated af (1985 in particular will probably get a version based on 2025 in twenty years lol!)

Thank god the girl is singing on the new song. There will probably be tracks with the dude though, RIP.

i guarantee you in 20 years people will remember who billie eilish is regardless of if she's ever successful again

well it's less egregious than mentioning a social media site at least (at least the Myspace references from the 00s were mostly in stuff that was never meant to be or promoted as timeless lol) which is my main hangup with besties, the "walking tiktok trend" line feels super unnecessary
it's also mainly that isaac is consistently in conversations as "THE" writer for gen z. Idk who I'd name but I feel like Jane Remover speaks to me a lot more when it comes to this generation of songwriters ig? And also J McClendon from Glass Beach?

"and then the supposedly timeless nature of this music won't be there anymore ig?"
I see your point about dating it, but don't think it takes away from the timelessness. Most of the time if an old song references something I don't understand, I will look it up or just not care / pick it up in context.

tbf it sometimes scares me how culturally relevant some songs from 30 years ago still are (namely stuff like RATM/Propagandhi, it's scary how "Killing in the Name" sounds topical and relevant so much later but i think it adds to its potency bc that's a case of "holy shit this is STILL an issue???? have we NOT learned???") so maybe not understanding an old reference isn't a big deal

"i guarantee you in 20 years people will remember who billie eilish is regardless of if she's ever successful again"
'WE' will, but what about the next generation of listeners? That was my point about the aging of music. I don't expect anyone present in this thread to have completely forgotten who she is
I think references of that ilk tie your music to a specific time, which can in turn narrow the field of those who 'get it' - probably wouldn't be a deal-breaker in this instance overall, just a general point about the inclusion of such things

It’s all filler
21st Century musical ‘icons’ have absolutely no substance whatsoever. They failed to make any difference and it’s all just market fodder.
