if i understand you correctly youre saying that in a way insight would literally just be agreeing with someone

'i found this insightful' would mean 'i agreed with their perception/point'. to get more accurate and to stay a bit truer to what 'insightful tends to mean', it would mean something like 'this helped me reconceptualise something i already knew but didnt exactly perceive the way this person does/ helped me realise something i was already dimly aware of'

this sort of reminds me of the platonic concept of recollection, the argument that all 'learning' is merely remembering/recollecting things we already know (knowledge has a very specific meaning here) but im far from an expert on that subject and find it one of the most confusing arguments in Plato. also theres loads of debate as to what exactly he even means/whether to take it literally.

i am trying to read Plato's whole corpus atm tho because i find him fascinating and The Republic was what really got me into philosophy. am currently like 8 dialogues in, got about 28 to go woo

Permission to pasta the above and tactically deploy it into threads of my choosing, potentially extracting nuggets of wisdom from the great philosophers who walk these halls

best advice i can give you is that whenever anyone puts forward a definition you dont like, or brings out the dictionary to win an argument, just scoff and go 'read wittgenstein' then bail

i think? a few years ago there were some people on /lit/ who brought it up, that it was the republic and maybe also meditations lmao

"it would mean something like 'this helped me reconceptualise something i already knew but didnt exactly perceive the way this person does/ helped me realise something i was already dimly aware of'"
yep, this is pretty much the wavelength i was reaching for - something you were already in some way tuned into, but are suddenly afforded new focus on.
e.g. "mmm o yeah i was distantly aware that late stage capitalism and trump and kanye-in-the-context of trump are things that exist and probably not good things, but now that lana del rey has covered them in sepia vomit, i can finally see them for what they are"
let's keep sharing

I translated one of those Plato things word by word. Think it was the Phaedo

if it was about the immortality of the soul and how bodies are an earthly burden then it would have been Phaedo

also, that sounds like torture

nobody is really a platonist anymore so they dont

but it has had its supporters over the years

i mean, it's basically the same argument as saying that people have a finite (though not necessarily quantifiable) level of inherent aptitude/talent/whatever and that the role of education is just to tap into that, so i can see it even if i wouldn't say i agree

I do agree with that actually. I just don’t see how you can argue that learning is just remembering things you already know

because plato thought that the soul was immortal so youre just learning things you knew from a previous incarnation

also worth noting he had a very specific and strict definition of knowledge which makes the argument a bit more reasonable. A lot of philosophical concepts sound ridiciculous out of context (not that i agree with him)
