Wouldn't say I hate this, but it makes me appreciate where everyone who's criticised this band all along was coming from a whole lot more

Album isn't exactly essential The National listening but I won't lie that I'm still glad they gave us more material to sink our teeth in. Can never get enough of this band. Doesn't hurt their legacy one bit.

It's just bloated, that's all. Has some filler, some totally unnecessary tracks, yet several essential songs as well, and lots of decent stuff.
It's basically The National's 'Hail to the Thief'.

Yeah, I get why fans dig this as a more-National fix (but I had thought I was a fan :[ )

Damn, tectac with all the best takes. Both 2.5s, both instrumental in sorting firm fans from casual admirers, both biting off more than they can chew. At least the sequencing on this one is up to scratch...

That's an interesting comparison, def see where you're coming from. This is quite a bit better than Hail to the Thief for though I could def see that changing with time, HTTT was an album I loved back when first getting into Radiohead but has slipped majorly with time and I can definitely see this growing off me in the long run, it's pretty unlikely I'll return to this as a whole all that often when I would rather listen to any of the previous six albums.

I actually feel I will end up appreciating this one more as time passes.

HTTT is great, you mean Amnesiac

Amnesiac thrives off being a shrapnel album, so is more similar to SWB in that regard

Yeah, I’ve said before multiple times and I’ll say again that the issue here is mostly in editing - this would have been a weaker album than anything since Sad Songs no matter what, but as it is it’s pretty meandering with a few B-side tier tracks thrown in. Cut the interludes and the three weakest tracks (whatever think they are) and you get a really consistent 10-track, 45-50 minute album instead of a 16-track, 64-minute almost-slog
