You should watch the tour Tabula Rasa version of Rinkaku, one of the best vocal performances ever.

Yeah, the guy’s vox take some getting used to, but man are they powerful when they hit.
I need to get more into their other stuff, I just play this and Uroboros on repeat at the minute.

I'd check The Unraveling EP sometime too. If you add Macabre as the final track (was exclusive to the limited edition only) it is their 2nd best album for me.
For older stuff, check Gauze for ultimate tonal whiplash from their later stuff/classic Visual Kei or Vulgar/Withering.

Macabre is one of my fav albums of theirs i think. I actually prefer the original Macabre to the remake to, which is definitely an unpopular opinion. Their early albums i think get a bad rap because they have more pop tendencies and the production isnt as poppin, but honestly macabre, kisou and vulgar are all really fantastic. I recently just find their remakes of tracks either redundant or unnecessary. The clever sleazoid remake from a few years ago was ATROCIOUS
Anyways this live of Macabre is dope: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQKVytEmGg0

"I actually prefer the original Macabre to the remake to, which is definitely an unpopular opinion"
I'd love to hear as to why since that is an abysmal take lmao.
"I recently just find their remakes of tracks either redundant"
They've been hit and miss after Unraveling unfortunately, yeah.

I still really like the remake trust me, i just like the theatricality of kyos vocals on the original its kind of hard to explain lol. Objectively, the remake is for sure better, its more a personal thing for me. Come to me for all the bad diru takes

This is in danger of making other metal seem less fun, certainly not the result I was expecting when I started 🤔

This album isn't really fun to me; it's just epic.

i feel like these songs were more for live performances vs uro and dss which are very much like, studio albums (still great live tho dont get me wrong). I basically mean, these sound like they are fun to play live for the band

@sam: That's because they were. They got tired of complex songs to play live with less crowd interaction, especally the Macabre remake with the guitar switching. Plus Kyo finally got some breathing room with more possible vocal passages (no one should be performing Uroboros and DSS on a nightly basis).

'This album isn't really fun to me; it's just epic.'
It can be both, no? Also, presumably this must be fun on some level to have it rated so highly. It certainly isn't a criticism (people often seem to think 'fun' = throwaway, surface-level etc.)

Yeah I didn't see that as a criticism, just that 'fun' implies to me a level of lightheartedness or boneheaded mosh pit tunes which only Cause of Fickleness and The Inferno has that for me.

Most of this is immediately engaging, there are hooks all over the place. And as a westerner, their overall schtick is quite (erm...) dramatic / over-the-top in a way (I suppose 'epic' suffices here). That's not exactly uncommon in metal, but the presentation is a little different here than what I'm used to I guess. The vox are impressive, yet were the biggest barrier in getting into this band, especially as someone used to more extreme styles in metal, but the instrumentals were almost immediately catchy. There's depth here though, no doubt. I keep noticing new things every time I listen.

Yeah if you're not down for Kyo's vocal pageantry then the band is a real rough ride; coming from a mostly metal background to Dir takes a while. He is the standout (whether that be positive or negative) but I'm glad you mentioned the depth because the band are just great songwriters.

I might bump this into the promised land (despite drunkenness occurring on at least a couple of the occasions where I’ve heard it - still counts!)
