YES! YES! YES!
Nothing on here comes even close to Speak Now's best moments.
|
| |
a lot of the songs on here actually annoy the shit out of me (blank space and out of the woods come to mind), and a lot of the songs are just downright boring (welcome to ny, right off the bat, has one of the most w/e choruses ever)

Nah, this is At least on par with Speak Now

It's her worst for me. Just bland synth-pop without anything to say at all. Nice that everyone likes that suddenly in 2015, but yeah...

the new Carly Rae Jepsen made this obsolete for me
|

idk, if people like this that's cool, i just don't enjoy it all that much. her older stuff is arguably more egregious if you look at how juvenile and cliche the lyrics are, but i love the hooks on speak now. enchanted is maybe the girliest song i actively listen to

KK: But does Speak Now say anything important?
Lucid: I need to check that soon.
|
| |
yeah, if anything it's the worse album insofar as having any significant message or interesting lyrics

Yeah, but the lyrics only got worse. Maybe they aren't as girly anymore, but she just says nothing with them anymore. I mean, how much less original could lyrics like those of Out Of The Woods, Bad Blood or Wildest Dreams be? Heard it like what, 100 times before?
Thematically nothing changed and I don't see how she's more grown up now judging by the lyrics, they are just less imaginative now. Her storytelling wasn't too bad after all, even if the message was just as old as it is now.
I agree though, most of it was about the hooks back then and, damn, could she right some catchy tunes. Enchanted is awfully saccharine though.

I don't really put much value into lyrics especially in pop music. The most important things by far are great hooks and catchy choruses and 1989 has those in spades. Her lyrics are as good as they need to be imo.

i thought the choruses were catchy in the annoying kinda way

Shake It Off's chorus is, but I'd say more of the choruses on Red were annoyingly catchy.

Importance of lyrics always depends for me. I agree that with pop (and some other stuff) it's mostly about the hooks and catchiness and if anything's fine with that I'm not exactly too critical of the lyrics. Thing is, as I don't like the general sound of 1989 and actually don't see many great hooks here, they get a bit more important, cause they could save it in a way.
It's also that anyone, including herself, is talking about how this is more grown-up than her older stuff and so on. And it just isn't. The same topics, the same approach, even the songwriting hasn't "matured" for me really. It's just a sound change and most people loved it for some reason.

If you don't like 1989 musically then I definitely get why you'd care about the lyrics more
And yeah her lyrics haven't changed very much in maturity from her last album agreed.
