Honestly, if I listened to Innocent and Instinct now, I probably wouldn't give it a 5.
However, it's still a fantastic, extremely well-crafted mainstream rock album. The riffs are
tight and crunchy, shown in the punchy 'Fight Inside' and rocking 'Death of Me.' 'Out From
Under' has enough edginess to make up for the sheen of the bulk of the album, which contains
perfectly executed midtempo songs. Not often do you see a band ambitious enough to have the
music mirror the lyrics, but that's exactly what 'Start Again' does, as the metaphorical
rebirth of the instrumentation reflects the lyrics of the chorus. 'Mystery of You' and
'Never Be the Same' have catchy choruses, that while not unique, are extremely pleasant. And
'Shadows' manages to reconcile all the previously listed strengths with a monster guitar
riff and fantastic chorus. Likewise, the spiritual lyrics are all inspired and passionate.
Overall, though the album probably suffers from not being terribly unique, Innocence and
Instinct is a fantastic mainstream rock album.
