I get that line of thinking 100%. For me, though, if everything on a record is a 5/5, usually one song that’s a 3.5 can pull me so far out of the perfection that I just can’t justify a 5 to myself anymore. A 3.5 is great on its own, but when surrounded by 5s, it’s not pleasant imo.
Homecoming is my favorite too. Astounding track

a 3.5 is great though so I don't see the problem
not every song on a record has to be the most incredible thing ever written
not sure I've ever even come across an album with more than a handful of tracks I'd consider to be a 5
|

Sometimes I'll 5 an album if it's got enough incredible songs, or if it flows well enough to feel like one entity. Even if there's a weak song in it.

the more this conversation goes on and you guys dissect the differences between 3.5 & 5's (in reference to songs) and how those individual ratings accumulate to an album rating) it really makes me question why i rate some things the way i do. there are definitely albums that have songs i would consider to be skippable-bad, but would still rate the album a 4.5-5.

I find if an album is a 5 for me then even the weaker songs are pulled up a notch in terms of quality as a whole, but I wouldn't listen to them on their own very often.

I’ve definitely come across albums that I thought were a 5/5 front to back. Usually it ends up being mostly 5s with a couple 4.5s, though. As for the 3.5 debacle, yeah, it’s still great. But, here’s how I look at it. If you have an album of 2.5s, a 3.5 is gonna sound like a god send. If that same song was inserted into an album full of masterpieces, it won’t have the same impact at all. Instead, it feels weak and out of place. Even if it is still a “great” song. And that weakness can greatly detract from an album that is otherwise perfect
Maybe this is all just my own odd thinking process though

like for instance TDAG is my fave album ever and I'd still probably only give maybe 5 songs on that a 5
it's also all relative too
like a 5 for Green Day is different than a 5 for mwY or BN...don't ask why
why you say?
well, I dunno, maybe I'm an idiot but I just have totally different expecations for pop, pop-punk, indie-rock, etc
Like 'Into You' by Ariana Grande is a hard 5/5 pop track; but is it better than the worst song on TDAG? Yeah, probably, but barely and in a totally different way.

But more importantly, have you ever come across an album of all 5/5's? I need to hear this perfect music lol.

I thought Southern Air by Yellowcard was 5/5 front to back. That’s the only album I’ve come across that was straight 5/5 for me. Symbolic by Death was pretty close too, and even still may be, but I haven’t spun it in a couple years so not 100% sure
