it's not a positive one either, in fact 2.5 is as neutral as it gets. Each to their own though, I know your rating system is on the conservative side.

How is 2.5 not a negative score???? Lol
|

I dont like the word neutral as it implys indifference. 2.5 is bare pass.I enyoy it but its not all good. Its like 60% enjoyment, 40% bore.
@Hawks 2.5 should be at least average

2.5 is generally perceived as negative because people are easily drawn into listening to albums they're likely to like a lot so if the album doesn't meet that and 'only' gets a 2.5, said album has usually disappointed in that case. obviously not everyone works like this with their jams and that's cool

Yeah, if listening to music was completely random then 2.5 would be the middle-ground. Imagine every time you hear something new there's no decision making process - so it's picked for you by a random generator, then in theory 2.5 would be the 'standard' score. This still doesn't factor in luck, or any individual preferences as some people either choose to be more optimistic/are more tolerant, or can find enjoyment in most things.

I'd like to note for the record that no one knew any other metal violinist or the even name of the violinist in this band.

@Artuma
If you tend to seek music you like a lot then your average will be good. Hence 2.5 is not disappointing.
@demon of the fall
Im not talking about the average of everything recorded in existance. Im talking about subjective average (the only feasible average for a person) not a hypothetical average derived from everything

'not a hypothetical average derived from everything'
It's subjective but there's still a scale, one which can be altered by other experiences i.e. album x is very good, but I don't enjoy it as much now I've heard album y & z, maybe it isn't the masterpiece I had previously thought it was.

i would have hard time giving an album i really like a score of 2.5/5. it just doesn't feel right
my stance is that 2.5 feels like a negative score but it isn't, yet it's not a positive one either

i do not enjoy albums i give 2.5's to.. 3.0 is like my threshold for enjoyment.
2.5 for me is like floating just outside of enjoyment but while also evading serious reproach.

2.5 is passable for me. Wouldn't call it good or bad, just middle-of-the-road and not notable whatsoever. It's nothing I'd enjoy, and even then I only tend to regularly return to albums I hold at a 4.0 or higher.
