yah it was a fun conversation. potsy, hype, and tornado are fun guys to discuss music with.
I look back on alot of recent year-end lists I made and go LOL WHO IS THIS GUY.
absolutely! i was literally just doing this the other day. fascinating to see how my tastes have changed (i don't like using the word 'evolved' in this context because, honestly, opinions just change, and it doesn't necessarily equate to maturation/evolution).
washboardsuds: dude, i haven't seen you in like forever. also, i was a little confused reading your post because it seemed like your response to my quote was actually a re-framing of what i said, but then maybe i wasn't coming across as clearly as i wanted to? i mean, if you can tell there's something there to explore and innately know it'll take repeat listens to crack the surface, then obviously you'd keep doing it. i thought that kind of went without saying. what i had meant was that, in those albums where you find little to no value and are left scratching your head thinking 'well, pretty sure there's nothing there to go back to,' it's safe to say you can put it down knowing you won't glean much.

yeah that was awesome my favorite quote:
I think most people (even those who review music) operate under the stance that music should work for them, rather than they put themselves in the music. They're under the impression that if a particular song or album doesn't click right away then it's not for them. It's why people continue listening to the same bands and same types of music for years on end. There's no growth because they're opinion is so linear and clouded within their own perceptions, that when anything tries to change or question that its simply discarded and left open to continue assimilating the same constant ideas.

definitely think it's possible to grow into a genre in a similar way to how an album can grow on you
|
| |
oh deeeefinitely
lets just say that until grade 11 i almost exclusively listened to metal. and I was even selective about that, it was mostly post, progressive, core, and sludge stuff. And I had a huge hate on for electronic and indie crap. Now I rarely listen to metal, and when I do its not the genres I listened to back then, and electronic and hip hop are probably the top two genres I listen to.

I've bounced all over the place in terms of genres so I can't other than agree. mostly metal and electronic these days though and out of those two, mostly electronic.

Mostly electronic/ambient for me lately. Gets me through the work day.

my ambient intake has been at an all time low but its coming back a bit

I feel like I should like ambient more than I do. I get teased cos I love Burial and Godspeed and this
and a few big artists but I can never get deeper into the genre without getting easily bored. One
exception is Stalker by Lustmord & Robert Rich. Otherwise I feel there isn't enough substance below
the ambience.

Ambient consists of the biggest portion of my music listening habits I'd say. Can't go a day without jamming some

Ambient music puts more emphasis on actual sound than musical structure. Song structures that follow the verse-chorus-verse-bridge-chorus gets monotonous after a while. That's why I enjoy ambient and other forms of music that are similar to it in the best possible way.

Love ambient, one of my favourite genres for sure. When done right it can be extremely evocative.
