And what's even more tragic is that he did it live back in 2009. He definitely should have been in the studio version

Maybe it was memories of that night that made him opt to not put any 'aggressive' Portnoy vocals on the new album. That was bad ass.

The band is respected enough to get high class harsh vocalists to feature on their records for sure. That would have actually elevated those songs instead of dragged them below the ground xd

A really stupid story tbh (2)
The whiplash of going from The Best of Times, which is heartwrenchingly beautiful and superbly written, to The Count of Tuscany which is quite possibly the worst lyrical and topical offering from this band,is pretty astounding

Going through the discography for the first time, and this one really stood out.
Nightmare To Remember is dark, atmospheric (yeah yeah DAY AFTER DAY sucks) and brilliant. Chorus on Rite is still in my head, Shattered Fortress (as is the rest of the 12 step suite) is great and I surprisingly enjoyed Wither a lot.
Best of Times was hard hitting lyrically and ending with The Count brought this one to a satisfying close. I like this one because I'm not a huge DT fan if that makes sense.
Production is crisp and the drums in particular sound gigantic.
Listening in 2026 without the huge expectations when it dropped in 2009 probably helped.
