The documentary is amazing. While I really dislike the album, the documentary at least made me respect it in a weird way.

it's a deeper look in a band in total chaos, going through it, and wanting to try something completely different. Metallica still can't get out of their own way in parts with the long songs, but it was bold for them to tune down and write darker-toned riffs after the long albums of Southern Rock inspired stuff.
It's more interesting than any of the "hey look we can still thrash / how do you do fellow young thrashers" stuff on the last two albums

I’d rather listen to any song in the last 2 albums than any song off this

I really like Death Magnetic
But this was the last 'tallica that I can honestly describe as genuine. After a decade of whiners bitching about Load / ReLoad and StA they've just been trying to prove themselves.

People who say or think that this is Metallica's worst album are smoking crack. It's mostly shit, but they've done far worse. I'd rank this above Load, Reload, Hardwired, and 72 Seasons without question. Pretty much on par with Death Magnetic.
