I agree with Nero. DT doesn't hit me as hard as Ryche's best anyway, and neither does FW. Even if DT or FW won a throwdown, I'll always be a bonafide Rycher till death.

Having said that, I still need to jam FW more.

I don't find DT as jammable as Ryche.

Aside from their admirable consistency, I find part of Fates' charm is in the fact that nearly all of their albums have a fairly unique sound and character.

Agreed with Nagrarok. QR may not be the "best" prog metal. But they are one of the few band that I am at least some part fanboy-ish for. They were my first ever "favorite band" back when I was 8 or so.
Having said that, I can still admit they've made some pretty terrible music for the last while up until now.

Ryche just rocked harder. DT was much too technical for my taste.

Queensryche are certainly less technical when compared to the other prog metal giants.

I mean mindcrime was better than anything DT ever recorded

Rage too, and yeah Ryche were much better songwriters than DT

Awake is DT's best, it found the perfect balance between heaviness, show-off moments and actual songwriting.

I prefer Images and Scenes, but Awake probably has their best balance agreed

Images isn't too far behind for me, Scenes easily secures 3rd place, but I've never been able to actually love that album, great as it is. It misses something special that I&W and Awake did manage to convey. Dream Theater have continued to put out good things and I very much enjoy most of what they've done, but they lost an undefinable sense of 'feeling' when they lost Kevin Moore. If that makes any sense.
Also, Awake contains what is EASILY LaBrie's best vocal performance. He's pretty phenomenal on it. Yet another reason why it's my favourite.

Big DT fan, huh Nag? I'll prob never love them that much.

I don't know, sometimes I can't stand LaBrie's voice ("I Walk Beside You" and "Wither" choruses, but I like the rest of the songs), other times it seems quite badass (pretty much everything on "The Enemy Inside").

Awake's my favorite DT album as well. I miss the less-wankish Dream Theater

I wouldn't say they're among my absolute favourites, but I do love those particular two albums a lot. Queensryche is fairly similar in the sense that I enjoy a bunch of their records, but that one (Mindcrime right here, obviously) just does something extra for me. As I mentioned some comments back, DT simply have a longer stretch of material that I can enjoy, unlike QR.

That we do. You ought to jam some more Fates Warning though, danny ;)
