Even though they've been successful and are recognized by many people, I still feel that Alice in Chains doesn't get the respect and attention they deserve. And when it comes to this album, it's not as accessible as Dirt or Jar of Flies, but it's special and amazing in it's own way. After two commercial releases, Alice in Chains could have continued in that direction. But instead they went back and created a very dark masterpiece. Fantastic band. RIP Layne.

I'd hardly consider Dirt a commercial release. It was every bit as dark as Tripod, but better in almost every way.

the only thing i even consider to be remotely commerical is facelift, which they admitted too, that they put their most 80's appealing style on to jump on a major label fast.

Wasn't the funk-metal sound how they originally sounded. I thought it wasn't a commercial choice as much as their roots, before they evolved into the heavy mofos they became.

This is good, but easily the weakest of their classic era.
I should listen to it more though, see if I can bump it to a 3.5 at least.

It's pretty inconsistent, yeah. And yet, Over Now is a solid closer. Prob one of the few albums (if not the only one) that I have 3'd and I consider to have a solid closer.

But all their closers on their Layne Era LP's are solid.
