ya I agree the production on this makes it feel really dated compared to it's contemporaries (queen is dead or disintegration...I know they're later...fuck off).
Like I'm sure this was the fucking shit in '79 and it's still pretty cool but it's not a classic

Dated? I dunno, doesn't really feel that dated for a '79 record to me. It sounds less dated than, say, an 80s New Order record for example, but then there's less synths obviously.

Sorry if that came across wrong, I love me some New Order. 80s synths and drum machines don't bother me.

the lyrics to that song are fantastic, even by Ian Curtis standards

I disagree with most of what you said. First off, his vocals are fine on this album. This is Joy Division not The Beatles, I don't need him to sound like an angel. Second, this album is definitely more dark and brooding than Closer. Day of the Lords, Candidate, New Dawn Fades, She's Lost Control, and I remember nothing comprise a majority of the album and are in no way upbeat. Third, the songs certainly are inspired. They came from a hard working band who may not have created the most dense musical sound but nothing at the time sounded like this. It's definitely a landmark in punk/post punk while Closer is deeper in the new wave.
Don't get me wrong, I love Closer too, but we all gotta show some love for Unknown Pleasures.

This remains top of the line post-punk.
I don't like the word "dated", it makes it sound like bands automatically become redundant as
production technology evolves. This is not the case here.

I still think Closer is darker than this, there's nothing quite as depressing as the album-ending duo of Eternal and Decades

As much as I love Closer as far as i'm concerned this is the definitive Joy Division album.

Brought on by fear"

First listen thought it was terrible.
Second listen think it's OK.
