Fun album, but something is not fully clicking.

My wife plays this enough around the house that I'm pretty sure I've listened to the full album multiple times by now. I've always had a soft spot for Miley. I actually really dug Bangerz even if it was appropriating a lot, but stylistically it's fun to see her sound mature over time while still tinged with a sort of "fuck it" attitude. Can't say I was a big fan of her "visual film" for this album as it's basically a long collection of music videos rather than a piece of connective tissue enhancing the experience of the songs.

This album fucking bombing and being forgotten about just shows how dire a state mainstream pop music is in. Easily the best thing I’ve ever heard from her and it seems like nobody gives a fuck.

Also highlights just how intertwined the promo/album release/tour cycle is to the success of an album. She has very meaningful reasons not to tour but it's clear that not fulfilling that part of the cycle decimates album sales since there's little opportunity to keep the album in the public conscious past the initial release.

Agreed that this is quite easily her best album. Stuff like this tends to play better to critics and actual music connaisurs. The fact that it's a commercial flop is kind of a testament to its quality because the most successful pop music tends to be at best basic retreads of once-innovative work and at worst sing-songy stuff like Opalite.

Production is quite muddy here sadly, and most of the music is not that engaging to me. A bit boring with some nice songs. Nothing bad happening here but it just does quite little to me.
