It is somewhat samey, I think the leads are the main thing sticking out and Phil's highs are menacing

This isn’t Samey to me whatsoever and certainly less exhausting than much other deathcore these days

I think the last two had more for me but this works great as a heavier companion piece

Probably the best thing they've done but still there's something about more modern overproduced metalcore/deathcore/death metal/tech death/most black metal that desensitizes me right away so it doesn't have any real visceral impact

it's like 'yeah brutal vocals. Cool riff here. Nice melody there. Anyway I better start making dinner'

Maybe I just burned myself out forever on these genres

I don't like Chapel but I love Phil. I'd kill to stick him in a different band. These guys just never did anything for me

last 2 tracks are definitely the highlight of this record. production is very not good... why do the toms sound like different sized buckets filled with sand?

This is going to take me a bit to get used to

Their last two albums were by far my favorite, especially Kin

This is one of the best deathcore albums I've heard in a while but I also just really wanted them to progress in that direction so I have to get past that lol

Can't rate it yet because of that - going to try this at the gym in a couple of days and I'm sure that'll make me appreciate it more, but damn I miss those Kin vibes, that was like my favorite album of the year when it came out

Sheesh.

I'm halfway through and this thing is so heavy and oppressive.

I'm a bigger fan of the more melodic direction from the last few, but I can't deny that this thing absolutely knocks. They were simply not fucking around with this one lol

i prefer the Valley/Kin as I was never into og whitechapel or that kind of deathcore in general but it is very cool to see them return to their sound in a way that really resonates with their fans like DAMN i wish a certain band (cough in flames cough) would do that ha hah haha but we know thatll never happen hahaha ahah fuck

Hey I actually finished a Whitechapel album in one sitting for the first time since high school. Really solid even if deathcore isn't really my jam anymore. It's going on ye olde playlists for me.

@artis

I had to see them live to get past that stance myself. Never dug much deathcore beyond suicide's first two because Mitch and because I felt like they were honest. Phil was goated by 2010, though. They are an absolute menace live. Sound incredible every time, dark and mysterious and Phil stalking around leveling the competition. And if you caught him on the valley or Kin tours, it's striking how strong the quality of his voice is during the singing bits. You can tell he took it seriously, wrote to his strengths and meant every word he sang.

I think this hits especially hard if you've been following Phil and the reception of the past couple albums. There is no doubt whatsoever that they grew as songwriters, I feel like that's near-universally accepted regardless of your feeling on the direction. Clearly people saying they'd gone soft triggered something, though, and its rare that a band actually delivers when they say it's the heaviest thing they've ever done or w/e. All I know is that the last two tracks hit me the hardest and are evocative of Kin while still being absolutely filthy.

May end up at a 4.5 because goddamn those leads
