"It might just be me but have these guys ran out of ideas? This whole album does not jive with me at all. There's decent ideas scattered throughout but as a whole... yikes."
I know I'm responding to a 3 comment guy but this album seems like the opposite of "out of ideas." I can understand not liking it but I don't think there's any lack of new ideas/experimentation here

Yeah wtf is that dude on about? Did the lute and flute combo do nothing for them?? Smh

This album certainly combines previous ideas in different ways than they’ve ever done before, at the very least. It’s unique in their discography in the same way Watershed is.

Anyway, just listened to the last two tracks again and I stand by what I said. The ending of Paragraph 7 is weak sauce. The closer is even weaker. This album deserved a Blackwater Park style climactic finish but it never got one.
Heritage > In Cauda Venenum > this imo, as much as it pains me.

I actually mildly agree that I wish it was more… grandiose? But both songs are still excellent

Paragraph 7 is good. Until it isn’t. Those last 2 minutes are just… nothing.

As far as the vintage-peth era goes:
Cauda > Sorceress > Last Will > Pale Communion > Heritage
But who knows? Maybe the new album will end up on top over time. It definitely seems like a grower

^ I’m in this boat. Except I’d give Heritage the nod over ICV

Pale Communion and Sorceress do absolutely nothing for me. Heritage has grown on me hard over the years but this and In Cauda are both amazing.

Heritage > ICV > this > PC > Sorceress and that is my final answer

Heritage is the only Opeth album I almost never go back to. I always want to like it, but the whole thing just feels really aimless and directionless to me. I still give it a 3, as there's a lot of good stuff packed in there, but as an overall experience, it always leaves me cold :[
As far as I'm concerned, that era of Opeth only got better as it went along

Man I couldn't disagree more lol. Wish I dug PC and Sorceress but they're just not my thing at all.

I don't have any issues with any of their more prog era albums.
Sorceress took a long time to grow on me and I believe with repeated listens this is in the same vein - a grower.

Sorceress wore on me the more I jammed it. Same with PC tbh. Makes me sad.

Some days when I’m feeling particularly hipster I’ll proudly say Pale Communion is my favourite Opeth album.
If I’m being honest though it’s probably Ghost Reveries, but still Pale Communion is so fucking good.
