not aoty by any stretch, it's not going to dethrone cotm and i sincerely doubt anything will

top 10 for me this year, which is a feat in and of itself because this year has been excellent. i don't think this is better than with love from a padded room either, that is getting legitimately slept on

I only heard the opener as a single and wasn't loving the production and idk why but that lowered my expectations. It still feels off. HOWEVER, everything else is so god damn good. I'm gonna listen to this all day.

So far I think it's good but they blew their load releasing Masc. That's a song I can come back and listen to over and over because it's interesting musically and lyrically. A lot of their stuff can be dissonant that, before taking into account the lyrical content, the songs are so affecting that you don't wanna come back and revisit them. I want an album I can hang my hat on instead of just dining and dashing. Truly personal taste, though. I'm just not in place in life where I can listen to sad bastard music in perpetuity and not have it fuck my mood.

they aren't even direct comparables, crippling alcoholism is more like the cure mixed with tom waits and a dash of jesus lizard

but they fall into the same grimy noise rock depressing venn diagram that chat pile is in right now, and the future of these types of bands seems very promising

Glad someone else picked out the Tom Waits influence on Love From a Padded Room.

there's something about how both albums take you into a different mental state through the dark narration

escapism you feel you might need to escape from to preserve your own sanity

lovely stuff

one is like the seething rage of despair, the other is like drunken reflections afterwards

both in the same unsettling "modern living is ugly" approach. liquid jesus is the most on point description of addiction i've heard in a long time

A lot of this album has shadows of Acid Bath. Almost like a spiritual successor to When the Kite String Pops.

definitely agree on the acid bath influences, those guys were ludicrously far ahead of their time

i think moreso on paegan terrorism than kite strings on this album

Think I slightly prefer God's Country tbh, but this is no sophomore slump by any means.

Dude actually barks at the end of I Am Dog Now which I never noticed until my most recent listen lol

think god's country is better overall but the highlights here (frownland, the new world, masc) are on that level. masc is prolly their best song tbh

Riding this high but think I like this better than the debut. Anyone know who else does vocals on Tape?
