I think this release from SYSC is about as tropey as anything I've heard released from the newer bands. Static Dress certainly wears their influences on their sleeves but this sounds exactly like something that would've released in 2008 rather than expanding upon it. I don't think their hooks are the strongest and the clean vocals are fine except for Connie's, which I just try to ignore.
I will agree that Static Dress hardly uses any harmony but as far as I know Olli is the only one that does clean vocals in the band.

that has not really been an excuse since double tracking was invented imo lol even if you're not doing them live they fill out songs so much. such an important layer regarding taking a song up the next level (but also that mileage will vary for those less high on the beach boys than i am). can think of tons of incredible harmonized parts from bands with one vocalist

I'm not saying it's an excuse but it might be more intentional? Coheed is my favorite band and they expertly harmonized 3 or 4 layers of Claudio on their first 3 albums so I'm all for harmonizing your single vocalist. I'm sure Olli and the gang know it's something they can do and they harmonize Olli's cleans and screams a lot on their songs. Based on interviews from them it sounds like they maybe like a more organic approach to recording by trying to replicate the live sound. If I've ever had any issues with Static Dress, it's definitely not from the songs not sounding full.
Still, I'm with you on harmonies. I feel like it's a dying art because the way they used to do it in the '60s was divine.

fr dude. like obv expecting a band to have five incredibly strong singers that cover distinct ranges (or rather 4 great singers and mike love) isnt happening lol but even just some multitrackin of some sweet sweet 3rds really go a long way sometimes
absolutely agree that claudio had a phenomenal ear for those

Struggling band attempting to stay float: fill the album full of at least 5+ features

Lmao you’re not wrong

I'm noticing features are becoming more common place in a lot of rock and metal

Saw that on IG yesterday. Really glad she’s still here… would be a tragic loss otherwise.

This brings me right back to Myspace, really great job re-creating that magic sound and putting a new spin on it.
Sad that Connie struggles so much. Hope she continues to persevere

@Lightandglass glad you mentioned static dress, I just threw this album on a playlist with static dress and Dreamwell (which is more of a stretch)

Static Dress and SYSC toured the US together last year so they definitely work really well on a playlist. If you haven't, you should check out SYSC's first album. It's a lot more chaotic than this but it's worth listening to since I think it slaps pretty hard.
