To me, Impossible Soul as an EP would have been preferable to Age of Adz in any other form =P

Impossible Soul is GOATed Sufjan and wears its bloat better than anything else I've heard from him

Too much cheerleader vocal repeating same phrase for ten minutes for me

It’s the very best and worst of Sufjan in one package which maybe is a valid career summation but most of the time I’d just listen to the last three minutes of it :D

Age of Adz t/t is a groovy little number

Still think the opener and ‘Now That I’m Older’ are the best of ‘Adz’, pack the emotional wallop

Yeah, nearly finished a Carrie re-listen and the highs are definitely higher but also strangely it is more samey than this one, really stands out going back to it.

Definitely remains the better album but has also made me think more of this one too, because it’s definitely not wall to wall better songs than the ones here.

I wasn’t aware just how important ‘Shade in the Shadow’ is in the tracklist, it’s this short little melodic palette cleanser among some good songs but they all be plodders tempo wise.

I shut up now

last three or so minutes of Age of Adz is his actual career peak, amazing stuff

Listening to it as we speak, often the second half of his songs are stronger yeah

Edit: so ‘Adz’ is still a bit ‘amazing song…not bothered song…amazing song’ for me, the ‘Postal Service’ wash I’m still not totally sold on - tracks 2 and 4 I enjoy less than anything here or on ‘Carrie’

Whisper it, but ‘Now That I’m Older’ is possibly as good as ‘4th of July’ though

Age of Adz is stuffed with quality, I just find the closer is a really daunting listen, rarely want to commit to it. But 'Vesuvius' is one of Sufjan's best, together with 'Futile Devices', 'Now that I'm older' and 'I want to be well'

The last few years I've realised sufjan is a monumental figure in the world of indie. I got into him at about the same time as the Arcade Fire (and maybe the National a bit later) and I always thought sufjan would be the lesser of the three in my listening habits, but looking at sufjan's career and my scoring, he easily eclipsed them in terms of importance.

I'm still settling my opinion on this but I'd be shocked if it landed below my 2nd favorite Sufjan. I haven't listened to C&L to compare like Doof has but that album is pretty essential and iconic in a way that would be hard to overtake, but I love that this has a lot of the same intimacy of that with a great balance of his more reserved and maximalist styles along with great songwriting across the board.

fogz - Adz stays a 4.0 for me thanks to the quality but again, track 6, another good but non essential track.

Half the album always felt like stylistic and/or conceptual padding but there are six of Sufjan’s best on there and that equates to a 4.

Carrie and Lowell is a masterpiece for sure. This is beautiful. The rest of his discog for me is pretty hit or miss. Feel like I was bit overexposed to Sufjan in college, so coming back to him now is really nice.

I can imagine 'Age of Adz' would come across best in a live setting

Age of Adz is GOAT'd for me. Though I think the album could've had some fat trimmed, primarily the middle of the album. Futile Devices, Too Much, Age of Adz, Vesuvius, All for Myself, I Want to Be Well, and Impossible Soul are all top tier Suf tracks.

I kind of think that Illinois is the only Sufjan album that I actually wanna listen to at this point, but I do love that album, so idk

First 4 tracks of Adz are phenomenal, but I've never listened to Now That I'm Older and enjoyed it. And it's up and down from there.
