excited for the botb take on this….
yeah reiterations is like the same sound they do that all of my favorite songs of theirs are and it’s the heaviest one to date. within the context of this album it stands out bc it’s one of the most listenable but on any other album it could very well be the most abrasive

I’ve never heard this band but 3 songs deep and this is fucking sick. Super abrasive and terrifying while also having a ton of melody and hooky parts interspersed.

"What's it take for an album to get that BNM by the by?"
the eagle has landed
but it got buried between some flavour-of-the-week indie flick and a couch potato comeback
this is a music site

@Prancer thanks for elaborating/clarifying I get you and don’t disagree - all my fave albums have that character, my point (as I think you reflected) was that albums can be excellent w/o necessarily needing to be replayable and (flipping it around) an album can be very replayable as heck and also be just meh (eg the new The Armed imo)
Also ye demon I get you, same for me. An excellent album doesn’t need replay value to be excellent, but to progress further into a personal long term favourite over years it does need it.

Interesting conversation here about replay value vs. quality/emotional connection. For me an album like this is definitely challenging - due to the length and the nature of the music, indeed it's just not something I'm ever going to listen to all that much as a whole, and as such I'm pretty unlikely to really connect with it. That said, the one full listen I've given it was quite impactful, or at least memorable. At the end of the day I'm always going to prefer albums/songs that are more concise and that lend themselves to a greater variety of listening environments and levels of attention.

i think it's the distinction between "one of the best albums" and "personal favorite"
theres a lot of stuff that i'd consider one of the best in x or y or z genre but i don't listen to it much because it a) is time consuming b) is better to listen in full and/or c) requires a very specific mood/headspace
|
| |
this may be an entirely meaningless distinction
but funnily enough "daughter of darkness" is the perfect example. incredible album, one of the best in the genre, but i don't think i listen to it enough to call it a personal favorite. maybe there's a better word than "favorite" but u get what i mean

Listened to most of that 24 minute track in the shower yesterday and I couldn’t decide if I felt like I was going to ascend to heaven or get psycho shower scene murdered

something can be a personal fave without even listening to it much, for me
like I don't throw Obscura or Shaking The Habitual on very often, but that's because I like to wait for the perfect moment and actually have the time to listen in full etc. Both are unique experiences that I value highly enough to consider top tier, yet I play other less impactful albums a lot more regularly
there are those rare albums which do cover both of those bases simultaneously, at least to an extent. idk Music Has The Right to Children is the first one I can think of, a beauty regardless of situation or levels of engagement

I can just as easily throw on any one of the shorter tracks by itself as listen to the thing in full, but I really only do the longer ones if I'm listening in the context of the album.

Okay this is 🔥. Margin For Error is insane.
the Nudes as the follow-ups too. A lot of influences I dig here.

Is this some kind of trolling thing? I thought the first couple tracks were pretty decent but then the album just absolutely nose dives and becomes one of the most simultaneously tedious and unintentionally funny things I've ever heard.

After a second full listen, there's definitely enough to enjoy here to keep me coming back I think, the last track is the only one that really tests my patience, if this is to enter my "regular listening rotation" then I'll probably take to skipping that one or at least the last 10 minutes or so. "Reiterations" and "The Reclining Nude" are prob my favorites.
