The album should just be the beggar lover (three)

Like a lot of Swans albums, this probably could have been two releases, and while The Beggar (Three) is undoubtedly the best moment I'd be upset if we didn't get a lot of the other gems here (particularly Michael is Done, The Beggar, and Ebbing).

Listening to it for the third time. As predicted, it becomes better after each listen. Bumping my rating 0.5 up already. This could be a contender for AOTY to me.

Weirdly enough the track that I think make this a 4 to me is Beggar Lover (Three). I just think it drags for too long
I do love Ebbing, Michael is Done , No more of This, The Beggar and Unforming a lot . Probably the only one that likes that track, but to each their own.

I'm at a point where I think every single song is, at minimum, worthwhile --- and most are excellent. Great comeback from the monotony of his last few.

Even though I love To Be Kind personally, I think this record brings back a certain element of Swans' sound that was absent in all post-Seer releases. The ambience has more depth and the drones are little scarier and immersive.

I’m on my 3rd listen now and while some songs are now getting better for me, I think the main problem that I’m unlikely to change my view on is that the album is just far too slow to be a 2 hour behemoth. It would probably would have worked better being nearer the running time of Leaving Meaning. It’s the only Swans album I have difficulty listening to in one sitting. There is just not enough going on. This more mellow oblivion fuelled angels of light folk approach really doesn’t have enough going for it for 2 whole hours. I’m going to try the vinyl track sequence and see if that makes any difference, keeping the Beggar Lover as a stand alone track.

I personally think the slow pace creates needed space for some of the album's prettiest moments to shine. I can't imagine something as beautiful as Unforming or Ebbing arising out of some of their older works.

I agree that the space is a welcome change to being pummelled. But Unforming could easily be a track from The Burning World. And Ebbing could easily have sprung from The Great Annihilator. Not to be dismissive of those tracks or diminish them to mere retreads but nothing feels particularly original in this album. Even the beggar lover is a trip down memory lane patch work of at least a handful of older songs. That’s not even an issue for me really, at this point in their career I’m not necessarily expecting or wanting new and fresh but just something that hits home. Journey continues for listen no.4.

Listening to each song in isolation I feel I should be rating this higher, it’s just when it all comes together as one listening experience I just can’t help but feel restless
