Per Nilsson has expressed he really wants phase 3 to tie everything together, while phase 1 and 2 work more as standalone releases. So phase 3 will have melodic call backs to the earlier phases that an unrelated release won't have

dunno, I think they're a pretty varied band even though they do have a distinct sound

It’s a predictable sound, but jam packed with crazy guitars and catchy choruses

Still many more surprises in this band's sound than say, Insomnium's or Be'lakor's. Those mofos play it safe as fuk

hyperborean plains is growing to be one of my favs off this, great song

That used to be my least favorite here but now I love it like all the rest. Love how the chord progression just keeps rising through the chorus. It's such a grooving, smooth track.

my least fav was always gridworm due to the unfortunate sung melodies in the chorus, but that one too has grown on me

It is strange that Phase 1 has one of the best production jobs I know. It sounds gorgeous. And Phase 2 is so muddy, it is hard to differentiate aspects of the instrumentation. There were recently details of the synths and riffs that I just started to notice. It's nice that they are there, but they almost might as well not be with how hard some of it is to pick out. The overall clarity and presence of everything is so much lower than Phase 1. Like what happened? Love these songs, but it definitely affects enjoyment

Someone fucked up with the volune adjustmemt with this one. Unless it was intentional, in which case... why? The loud and bombastic cleans have always been a central piece in the appeal of Scar Symmetry.
|

yeah the loudness was also the first thing that jumped out to me from this release. major reason why i still havent checked this

Xenotaph is such a badass track. The solo/pre-chorus at 2:52 especially is so fucking cool.

always gonna brag about being in the choir in that song
on another note, henrik & benjamin have left the band, have been replaced by the long-standing live drummer Lawrence Dinamarca and guitarist Stephen Platt who has played with Devin Townsend before
I'm a bit worried since while Henrik's drumming was not irreplaceable, his lyrics just may have been. Hoping he's a good buddy and writes the lyrics for Phase 3 anyhow, at least for consistency's sake

Henrik had some good stuff between his drumming and his lyrics, plus he was in the band for the longest besides Per, it'll definitely feel weird without him. Crazy to think that Per is the only one left from the beginning of the band. It's cool that they got someone that played with Devin, though.
|
| |
so per is the only OG member now? yikes

I'm afraid so. Though between the two, I'd definitely prefer Henrik leaving than Per. I can't imagine them without Per's guitar work.
