was not feeling very good about this but am pleasantly surprised at how this album ends with maybe its three best tracks... prob takes it from a 2.5 to a 3.5
inamorata def feels like they wanted to do another outlaw/fixxxer type track but in the modern-metallica mold

Going in without listening to any singles, this is way worse than I expected. Shadows Follow, Chasing Light, Too Far Gone, and Inamorata are the only songs I found remotely interesting.

Some great moments here but half an hour too long. Compiling last three records in to hour or so is a good idea. Enough good material for 3,5 there and I don't think any of these three records really work as a album anyway.

Excellent review, I totally relate to the opening paragraph.
The scientific term for it is "musical paralysis", and it evolves analogously to Hemingway's definition of bankruptcy; gradual for years, terminal from a point further.

The appropriation of the Batman Theme is growing on me on ‘Shadows Follow’ - suits the theme/song title too

Listened to this while going to work.
It's good, but has a lot of flaws... I mean, Lars's drumming is still generic and feels uninspired, some songs drag for too long but all in all, it's fine. I really dig the second half, with some new sounds. James's voice is shot, but to be honest, he made it an advantage.

the thought of listening to a new metallica album just makes me feel really tired

you can use nostalgia to excuse shit art in anything
|
| |
Art can be a wet macaroni noodle on a dog turd as long as someone, somewhere gets something out of it. Who cares.
|
| |
In which case it would be the only excusable time to use the term “shit art”

anyone know the last time Lars used a ride cymbal? i think Until It Sleeps

yep... literally just for that one recording
i don't think he's used a ride cymbal on his kit live since at least the ride the lightning days

Some good ideas overwritten by bloat and laziness. Typical Metallica, as has been the case forever and a day. Too much is samey, too much is dull, hard rock radio rock Metallica makes me sad.

"No, nostalgia should not be used as an excuse for creating or accepting subpar art. While it is natural to feel sentimental about certain things from the past, it does not mean that we should automatically overlook flaws or low quality in art that is intended to capitalize on those feelings."
i cannot believe you thought I was saying that as a positive thing

"lol yeah i've seen many claim this is the worst album art ever"
This notion is such hyperbolic bullshit. "Worst album art ever"... there are at this stage, COUNTLESS examples of worse album art (like, absolute dogshit... especially in metal) over the last 40+ years. This here... isn't great by any means, but at least it's graphically distinctive, memorable and compositionally balanced (composition's derpily basic, but shows some understanding at least), and at least somewhat thematically fitting.
It's just whinging for the sake of it at this stage.
