I'm a sucker for that off-beat hi-hat in Opaline.

I changed my mind, Birds is the best song they've written in a decade

feel like this is just aight. there's not much atmosphere left anymore imo, it's just fairly simple chugs and Jonas doing his thing over the top. it's fine, but listening to this and jumping back even to Old Heart Falls there's a world of diff

they really gotta chill on putting the best tracks as the bonuses too

Definitely hearing the Opeth influence in spots

Unfortunately it's a late era Opeth influence...

This and Riverside ruined my weekend. So disappointed in both albums and had been so looking forward to them. This is just drab and so little of it resonates with me in any way. Austerity, Opaline, Author and No Beacon will all make it onto a Katatonia playlist but the way feels lifeless. The fourth attempt to listen to this the whole way through was a drag, and the run of Impermanence and Sclera literally breaks my will to carry on.

Riverside feels a little weak but I find this album pretty enjoyable and a little, just a little, adventurous at times, im prolly keeping the 4 and maybe even bumping it at some point, Im enjoying it way more than last one.

@Sab nothing here is as great as Vanishers but it's more consistent overall than City Burials. Birds grew on me a lot

Need to give this a spin, it’s been years since this band has grabbed me but this sounds promising. Been on an old opeth kick lately so now seems like the perfect time

Haha, i get some good old Toto vibes on some guitar driven parts in colossal shade. I like!

Easily my weakest of the modern era Katatonia. At this point in their career to criticise them for lacking in variety in their sound is likely missing the point: they have never strayed that far from the path first beaten with TGCD. NITND for me took their modern sound to its pinnacle and remains my favourite Katatonia album. I initially struggled with City Burials but over the years that has grown considerably for me with its more adventurous take on their sound.. I find that album so interesting to listen to and it’s about as adventurous as they’ve got in expanding their sound. The new one though feels like a step backwards.

No Beacon stands out as the best track for me. It’s approach is more in line with the previous album. It weaves its way through various stages, and sounds and pacing. It just sounds like they experimented more with this song. I’ve just listened to the two albums back to back and that has cemented my view that City Burials is the superior album in providing more involving and immersive music.

Ranking is hard because of all of the different eras and the vastness in scope. Mine would be something like 1) Fall of Hearts 2) Last Fair Deal… 3) Night is the New Day 4) Brave Murder Day 5) Viva Emptiness 6) The Great Cold Distance 7) Tonight’s Decision 8) Discouraged Ones 9) Dead End Kings 10) Dance of December Souls 11) City Burials.

The new one….idk yet. Could see it get up to #7.

"So far my only triumphs are Ghost, Scorpions, The Alan Parson project and A-ha. Other than that is Blippy, Groovy the Martian, Peppa Pig, Little Angel and Super Simple Songs 24/7."

Blippy is creepy af. I don't put that shit on for my daughter!

Anyway - new record is excellent. Still want to get a few more spins in before I drop a rating.
