Why's that? This is way, way, way less pretentious than their newer stuff. Anything after Blackwater Park is just plain worthless. These guys need to go back to doing stuff like this. I can't really explain it, this album just sounds different from anything these guys have done in over a decade.

this is pretty much boring melodeath imo

In my mind, their are two era's to this band:
Orchid & Morningrise are there less produced, more death metal influenced albums. MAYA and so forth.....sexy! hahaha You either love one or both.

I don't understand why this is usually the lowest ranked Opeth album not named Orchid. Advent, The Night and the Silent Water, To Bid You Farewell, and Black Rose Immortal are all in the upper echelon of Opeth songs. Methinks it's just because Morningrise demands the most patience from the listener, especially with Black Rose Immortal.

I love both the less produced death metal influenced Opeth albums and most of the slightly better produced albums (except 'Watershed').
I can't understand how 'Orchid' and 'Morningrise' are so under-rated on Sputnik.

Well yea its not the best song ever. Certainly it doesnt need to be 20 minutes long, but the clean vocal/ acoustic section is amazing

Probably my least fav Opeth album but it's still pretty great

This is an underrated album, but I can see why people don't like it. The songs aren't very cohesive really. There are tons of great riffs, but much of the album has kind of a sloppy thrown together feel. The riffs are really awesome, but they could have been put together into more cohesive songs. As for what Crysis says, I think this album is more pretentious than their new stuff.

I don't think it's the fact that nobody likes it I think its just the fact that frankly the work isn't up to par with their later releases. It's still amazing just not as amazing

lol, I love this album, one of my faves by Opeth. Love all the songs, but To Bid You Farewell and Advent are my least favorite, though still great. Black Rose and Night and the Silent are the best in my opinion.

Pretty bad. At times (70 percent of the time) it sounds like Mikael and crew put a bunch of cool rock riffs together.

"To Bid You Farewell" is a beautiful song, and to hear it live was even better. I just love the raw production and dark melodies that are all over this album.

I appreciate that I'm like 14 years late, but am I the only person who's heart stops when listening to this album? Every second of this album is a depressing masterpiece. The only thing that could possibly beat it is MAYH... Or Still Life; either way, 3rd best album ever written isn't exactly a bad thing. Don't quote me on that though, my favorite albums tend to change alot - However, what I can guarantee is that the top 3 will always be by Opeth.
