Exemplary imo. Truly tuneful and engaging. The poptimist writing around this one (album quality as self-evident, parading its influences and bad bitch credentials for the artist as tantamount to incisive music journalism) really felt like we were about to get sold another "event" album more interesting on paper than entertaining. But damn! s/t has the highs but as an album guy, I'd say this is front to back the best. Wanted to like this and did! A triumph.

"House music is something that is, by design, meant to be high energy and push vocals, however soaring or impressive, into the background of irresistible beats. You simply can’t do that with Queen Bey on the mic and a brand to uphold. This winds up with the songs essentially at war with themselves constantly with the production both trying to be bouncy enough to make you dance, but not distracting enough to detract from constantly reminding you that you are listening to Beyonce."
Actually agree with this, to a degree. Interesting tension in the album that flagged as a flaw before becoming something more like a genuine triumph of function stepping up to the challenge of, like, debasing the form. Queering the space but make it Beyoncé. People smarter than me can probably tell us why that is actually really bad but party people roll up!

the virtue it possesses of making a genuinely full-bodied effort to import more fundamental elements of dance/club/house/w/e music than just direct references and sonic bells and whistles (although why did she have to shoot herself in the foot in this regard by choosing fucking "I feel love," "I'm too sexy," like I love that first song but it's like. cmon. "I feel love"? Cover "the weight" next!) is also its downfall because I think it's too samey and the tracks rarely thrill me at any points. I like that she thinks on the level of (album) structure, think of that quality as a pretty unambiguous virtue for a pop musician of her stature, I just think her thought process here led her down a path I like much less than the ones on Beyonce and even Lemonade which I already thought was a step down

I think Beyonce is one of the best albums of the 2010s and I think Lemonade is a light 3.5, although it's hard to say why. I have an insane level of sentimental connection to s/t
