After listening to this about four times all the way through.....
I think it's a great album, and the problem is simply I've outgrown this band

I doubt you've outgrown them. I think their sound has just become uninspired/way less creative over the last decade. This album is a small breath of fresh air with some great songs but if you played half the songs from this next to something from IKS or GAI 15 years ago I'd tell you Claudio joined a new band.

I found this quite perfectly acceptable Coheed-core

I dig this poppier direction, the album is noice.

Enjoyed the Unheavenly Creatures record, this one in a similar vein?

yes but more concise and poppy.
Also it's funny how people are saying they wish Claudio sang in unique ways, Ladders of Supremacy chorus is an absolutely bonkers melody.

"Enjoyed the Unheavenly Creatures record, this one in a similar vein?"
Different feel, significantly poppier and a half hour shorter. If you enjoyed the last one you might dislike this because opinions look flip flopped.

Well shit, hearing Claudio nu-metal scream over funky baselines is the sound I never knew I wanted

album is probably a lmao/5

I dunno guys, I had fun with this album. Yes its poppy, but the kind of good pop prog. Then again Year of the Black Rainbow is one of my personal favorites from these guys, so make of that what you will.

So I listened to this a second time and I still really enjoyed it. I'm comfortable slapping a 4 on this for now with a +/- 0.5 star leeway. I'll have to finally read the review to see where the criticism is coming from, but to me this felt like everything I've wanted from the band recently -- just a consistent series of fun rock bangers.
|
| |
My rating has that +/- 0,5 leeway too, I guess.
Edit: Looool, I thought I was in the Porcupine Tree thread. Some comments confused the hell out of me lmao

this could be a 4 if it didn't have love murder one, blood, bad man, and your love on it
|
| |
So, a few things:
1. A Disappearing Act could've been such a banger if the chorus was more satisfying
2. Cut off the first one and a half minutes on Ladders Of Supremacy and that is easily the best song on here
3. This album hasn't one decent bridge
4. This is a bunch of talented musicians wasting their talent

I thoroughly enjoy A Disappearing Act. Definitely a curve ball though! Ladders is great as is. I will have to pay attention to the bridge comment, but I think this is a bunch of talented musicians having a good time and leaning into the pop tendencies more than usual with great results.

Imagine saying Josh's talent is wasted on this album.

Damn, blood and bad man are easily 2 of my favs on here. The chorus to blood is gorgeous
