Yeah that's what I'm sensing, it's pretty enjoyable just from a production or general 'aesthetic' standpoint even if I haven't fallen for all the individual cuts.

good point, but for years now I have never built into the hype of Perfume Genius, but I could never fully explain why that was because in so many ways he is the exact thing Harry Styles tries to be, even though he has no idea that he is trying to be like Perfume Genius. But on this new album Alan Wyffels goes against his art and ambient pop underpinnings to do something only artists like David Bowie and Scott Walker have been able to pull off; a complete dive into avant-guard and experimental music. ?Ugly Season? on the surface might be an ugly mess but digging into the album and experiencing every second of it immersed in its noisy, experimental, and psychedelic vibes you will see the real beauty of what happens when you dive headfirst into the creative bucket. A truly intriguing and exciting listen that any fan of the artists mentioned or fans of art punk (not sure why but it gives very art punk vibes) will fully enjoy, truly great listening experience.

the last time I spun this it didn't hit quite so hard; I'm just going to chalk it up to a temporary mood/vibe mismatch though because this floored me the first couple weeks after it came out

That can totally happen. Sometimes it's all about finding yourself in the right state of mind, even for an album you hold in the absolute highest regard.

OK listened to this again and it's perfect. Now I feel bad for doubting it.

Yeah I def prefer the previous record. Relative to that one feel like this one is a little all over the place, which in itself isn’t a bad thing, but I can’t even get a feel for what this album is

I have very similar feelings, I was just thinking about dropping my rating down a notch because it does feel a bit weaker than most of my other 4s from this year.

Still sitting pretty in my Top 10 for the year (#4) and I'm thinking it's unlikely that it will seep outside of that - spun it again recently and found it just as compelling as when it was released. and I honestly don't see seven albums I prefer to it being released between now and 2023. I guess you never know, though. Been a good year for music overall imo.

Yeah I’m increasingly convinced that this might be the best year for music since I’ve been a more or less active follower of new releases. 2015 is the only competitor really.

This is my favorite year in a while (for both music and life) but I’ve also listened to way more albums this year than in the past

2019 is assuredly weaker than the years surrounding it overall, and yet it's also responsible for my most recent 10/10 (chronologically speaking) since 2014.

It feels to me like this year has benefitted from having a lot of the first true post-lockdown releases for a lot of acts, with a lot of things I imagine were stewing longer than they otherwise might have dropping (also, I think, part of the reason there have been so many double/triple albums). I expect another slump in the next year or two though, if only just because so many of my favorite acts have had releases this year that it’ll take another few for the next album cycles to roll around.

2012 and 2013 are unrivaled for me in my time on the site
Fav year for music ever is probably 2000

Interesting some are citing 2020 because that was a decidedly mid year for me.
